    Hi

I've decided to buy a cross cut shredder for disposing of household documents etc.

I'm not sure how to choose a good one though. Any recommendations? It would just be for household use, preferably with auto-start if it detected something being put in.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I got one from Tesco a couple of years ago - £15 if I recall. Works fine, gets a bit warm with prolonged use, but it's been ok.

What budget do you have? There are a few features you need to consider. I personally wouldn't go for less than security level 3 and would recommend a cross cut one instead of a striped cutter. Auto feed/cut off seems to be the norm and you can also get ones that cut credit cards/CD/floppy disks too.

Try and go for around 8-10 sheets of paper feed at once minimum.

I've just brought a shredder for use in the home. Swordfish 2000XCD costs about £130 and it is much much better than the crappy £20 ones.

I've noticed some are Din Level 3. I take it that means security level 3 and probably refers to the size of shredded bits?

Budget would be up to about £80 for a fairly good one.

Yes,it may be,but my £20 from Argos has survived 3 years and is a perfectly acceptable cross cut dosmetic shredder.I've got a far superior shredder at work for sensitive/confidential documents, but this is not what most of us need for our bank statements etc.

There was an advert in the Telegraph a short while back for a shredder that exceeded all US/UK specification for any documents.I can't find it online, but IIRC it reduced a sheet of A4 to over 60,000 fragments:eek:Why not just incinerate it then powder it?

Buy a couple of gerbils. Should cost you around £5.
