Incidentally both the English players were awesome and I hope they both play like that when they turn out for their country

Yes simply because their fans will moan like a broken record that they could have won it again at a canter if they don't. For the sake of my pub sanity let them in.

I honestly think that there should be no special treatment, they didn't qualify for the competition according to the rules laid down. It is a cup competition, even though they call it a league.

delighted they won, however, it is absurd to insist that every winner must be entered automatically into the competition the following year - these aren't the rules. Let the teams who have earned entry into next years comp fight it out.

I can think of more competitions where the winners have to earn the right to defend it.

Sorry Liverpool, but there is no need to change the rules, well done on winning it this year.

Much as I'd like to see them play in the competition next year, why should UEFA change the rules - previous year's winners haven't automatically got in the following year so why should Liverpool be any different.

I know Real Madrid got in a couple of years ago but that's only because the Spanish FA let them go in at the expense of Real Zaragoza.

If the FA were to try and do this with Everton, I'd image that, at the very least, Everton would sue for loss of earnings.

Perhaps it does need a rule change by UEFA to allow the previous year's winners in but it can't be backdated.

So was I until this whole problem surfaced after Liverpool won the semi-final. I guess I just assumed as that's how the World Cup works...

Anyway, it should only be the league winners in the "Champion's League" !! and the winner of the previous year's competition.

I voted "no" (having first taken the liberty of inserting that option into the poll) as the cup has already been devalued enough by no longer being a competition for each country's champion and I would prefer not to see it devalued further by changing the rules in arrears to accomodate a club that couldn't gain entrance in the same manner as every other club.

plus haven't they changed the World Cup rules so that only the host nation is the one which gains automatic entry?

Er...what if Liverpool only finished 11th in the Premiership, but still won the Cup?

Kind on devalues the UEFA Cup compo if the winner of another trophy gets a freebee.

I voted no because as far I know the only time a team as actually defened the Cup & not qualified the following season is Real Madrid all the other teams defened the Cup because they they qualified via their league position in their domestic league !

Liverpool did have the chance to defend their cup.

    But they failed to qualify.

Similarly it would be possible that the World Cup Winners could fail to qualify.

No. They knew what they had to do to qualify for the Champions League next season, as did every other Premiership team. They knew the rules before last season's Champions League started and they knew them before they stepped up to take their penalties.

Chelsea and Arsenal are the only 2 teams to get automatic qualification because they were better than Yankchester Oonited and Everton. They in turn reached the qualifying round than being better than Liverpool. Tough but true. Get over it.

Yep , IIRC the French  complained that they never had any proper competitive games in the lead up to the last finals , this leading directly to their **** poor performance in Japan/South Korea :rotfl:  .

I believe that defending Champs should be automatically entered , but only if the rules state it . You don't qualify by the rules , you don't get in . Can't see where the discussion is , to be honest . They had 38 games to qualify for next years CL , and they didn't

ok, now i've voted "as uefa's representatives" because after coming back from 3-0 down against the team that embarrassed us (man utd) twice, they deserve to have the right to defend their crown.

BUT normally i would vote "no" because it would be very easy for a team to rest all their best players for the league, not caring about the final league position because they then play a full strength, fully rested team in the champions league, increasing their chances of winning it and getting back in next season despite finishing low in the league.
