Should this forum be renamed the HD Forums or the Sony Forums, thats the only DAP we ever seem to talk about

    And? ;)

Feel free to start threads on other DAP's, its not illegal as far as I know...

If only the H10 had better battery, and not such a god damn awful hard drive. When I had one, used to drive me up the wall with its access speed through menus and when changing tracks etc.

As you can see from the What DAP do you own thread, there are plenty of owners of other DAPs in this forum. It's not our fault the HD5 is the one that's most discussed at the moment...

Well granted most threads are about the Sony HDx or Sonic Stage....

Sony are jumping for joy? Upon closer inspection most if not all those threads are a cry for help due to various problems

That I haven't seen a thread asking for help for another DAP in ages is something Sony should know about

The HD5 does have a lot of problems, but not all the talk about it is negative though. These are technical forums and I think the more technical savvy people out there normally go for DAPs other than Apple's iPod.

iPods are marketed to the masses, given away as presents in bulk from Christmas to birthdays, always the prize of choice on from crisp packets to promotional websites. In short, I believe the majority of people who want a HDD player won't look beyond the tips of their noses and will go for the iPod - in many instances it is all they know of. The other minority of iPod owners who chose the iPod truely because they believe it is superior to the other DAP's out there are well...all here on AVForums... :) :)

Oh yawn fest. Its a new player, its problems are new. The iPods many, many, many issues are already well documented and dealt with.

I would say the HD5 has more problems anyway. Well, the problems are much more offensive to the buyer, its a Sony player don't forget, like I do sometimes.

I'd agree to an extent - but I`ve been a Cisco (CCIE) routing specialist for 11 years and 16 years in the communications industry.....I`ve got an Ipod....

Ok, I bought it for my wife :D

Well if you are a CCIE then you are earning a shedload of money, so you could probably just buy one of every MP3 player on the market and test them that way. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think what's happening is people are Googling 'Sony HD5' (or similar) and winding up here. Try Googling 'iPod' (about 6,500,000 pages at the last try); then do the same with 'HD5' (1,600,000 ... something like that). And not all of those point to Sony related info (HD5 is too vague a search term). So the sheer volume of references in this forum must draw a lot of people to investigate it.

All of the above, plus it must seem to some a welcome respite from the millions of iPod pages out there ... which isn't a swipe at iPod owners, honestly!

HD5 problems aren't that user offensive...cracking buttons yes but the operation of the player is quite good in my experience so far. 90% of issues people seem to have is with Sonicstage, and I can't see for the life of me why. Had a minor heart attack 5 mins ago when the artist section on my HD5 was blank, reboot fixed it though.

I would've thought the many complaints I have seen about complete loss of function (hard drive complete crash) and battery life of 4-5 hrs would've been more of user offensive problems, with regards to the iPod. I used to get frequent crashes when I had one also. That's what I saw the last time I went on iPod lounge.

I think I may be lucky and have got one of the 2nd gen HD5s with the newer buttons because I have no cracks thus far. I haven't removed the plastic film yet but I'm sure they'd crack anyway.

    I'd link to think that I've gotten a HD5 with unbreakable buttons because its from japan and cause it came with 1.2 firmware installed on it, but I dunno, i havnt takent he plastic off it either, even though its inside silicone, but id think it would break either way, with it on or off. But I think they might be releaseing HD5's with the newer buttons. Unless someone got their from Japan, with 1.2 firmware on it, and the buttons crack, then I know I dont have anything special ;.;

    a) keep this forum, but have a seperate Sony MP3 players thread
    b) create SS FAQ sticky and Sony HDx FAQ sticky

well, when i wanted to find out more about HD5 (actually about all the problems that it might have) i have googled around, and this forums were the best source of info.

I still haven't found one page dedicated to sony HDD walkmans, which i find weird, because here in croatia the HD5 is sold out in almost every shop, therefore i thought it might be popular enough to have a dedicated community.

there is....but I'm not one to post links to rival forums.

But if atrac is all that matters in life to you, I may tell you. Maybe.

There seems to be more in this forum about Sony HDD Walkmans anyway, even if you do enjoy the atrac life.
