Should the Cambridge 540r sound better than 340a in stereo?

My 540r died, I only needed a stereo amp so bought the 340a se yesterday. I've had my freeview box plugged into both the 540r and the 340a so I can listen to the radio and the 340a sounds quite muffled in comparison. I am driving a pair of Wharfedale 9.1's with it. Is this normal? Does anyone know if it would be a bad amp or if it's just how the 340a sonunds, because to me it's not as clear as the 540r was.

On a side note, every time I turn the 340a on it goes to CD, instead of the setting that it was on before I turned it off. Is that normal too?

Thanks for any advice.
