    Hi,

    I have a Mission 77 setup

    774, 77c1, 771e (just preferred to 77ds as i like directional...)

I am thinking about adding a new speaker for the rear centre soundstage to match the new 6 chnl receiver I will be buying. Most likely an STR-VA555ES but just possibly a 3802

What would be the best solution to upgrade to 6.1 simply and cost effectively?

    1) Add one single 771e
    2) Add a pair of 771e's on same channel (allowing for 7.1 later)
    3) Add a dedicated centre speaker at rear soundstage say a 77c1

    Thanks
    Tim

    Hi

Of those mentioned, I´d connect a single 771e as it will match your other rear speakers. Or, as you said, a pair of them.

    Thanks,

guess sinlge 771e is the way that I'll go then.

    I think 2 771e's is only really an option with a 3802 or VA555ES + Power amp.

There are many posts already about speakers to use for centre rears.

Dolby and DTS both recommend the use of two speaker for the 6th channel for surround back. This aids the use of spreading the sound out and effectively removes your perception of a localised sound (With one speaker the sound is easier to target whereas with two the sound is spread out and harder to localise which makes for a better surround sound).

Di and bi polar speakers are usually the best recommendation for surround backs as they also aid better unlocalised sound dispersion.

My setup includes two 77ds as my surround rears and I have to say I think they are excellent speakers.

Centre speakers are not the ideal speaker to be used for surround rears

If a single speaker is directly behind us (180 degrees) our brain sometimes mistakes it for sound in front of us.
