I'm about to upgrade my multi-region Sony s715 and would appreciate advice on which players i should consider.
Onboard decoding and cd replay are not a priority, but picture quality and DD/DTS output are. I've been considering a Sony 7700 but is this still the player to get? or are newer players like the Pioneer 737 that much better.

    Thanks for the help.

I upgraded my Sony R2 715 to the cheaper better region free 725.

The 725 has got better sound reviews (CD I think,as oposed to DD/DTS,which you're not bothered about) than the 7700 and it's about £300 cheaper.

The 7700 is taller than the 725 and you might prefer the looks.

There's not much to choose between the 7700/715/725,apart from DTS on the 7700/725.This is the reason I upgraded for and to get region free.

The 725 comes out tops in alot of reviews.

Personally, I thought the 725 was over rated and overpriced.

What do you want from your DVD player ?

    Picture and Sound or features.

Toshiba produces unbeatable picture performance and the sound is not far away from that of a Sony. Most Toshiba DVD players output detail upto 5.8mhz around -4.05db -5.5db's. This is almost d-master quality. When you compare the detail retrieved by most Sony's they are around
    -7.5db's to -9db's.

Sure you get no features whatsoever but a Toshiba SD-100E for £210(Multi Region) is a steal. Wait for the RCE upgrade though.

    Regards

Isn't the 7700 the only Sony with a component output?

I agree that Toshiba makes very good players, picture wise at least.
I don't think the sound for DD/DTS will be too different when using the digital out but Toshiba's are said not to be the best CD Audio performers.

The main difference between the Sony players is the fact that the 7700 is CD-R compatible due to it's dual laser pickup and CD-Audio is pretty good, too.
Still one of the best players for sensible money around and well worth comparing to the new Pioneer.

I have a 7700 purchased in June this year (@ £650). I have o say that the quality of the output from this unit is remarkable. I demd it alongside a host of High end decks and at the time (May), IMHO nothing could touch it quality wise.

HOWEVER. The CD replay (dedicated mechanism) is not upto the standard of my Denon DCD1015 (a £350 unit). An opinion echoed through many review magazines. - Though my Arcam Alpha 10 is a quite revealing amp.

The Component output is a definate plus and gives an excellent account of itself.

    Good luck

The Sony 735D also has component outs. I would say, that the 7700 is a bit dated now.
Yes, it's a quality built player, but I've compared my 735 to my friends 7700. Have to say the 735 came out on top. (He agreed!)
