Should I take the plunge?

No doubt you've probably seen countless numbers of these topics on this forum over the last couple of months. Anyway, I'm quite interested in the PS3 for games and BluRay, and will eventually get one sooner or later, but I'm not convinced whether I should get one now, or wait a little longer.

1, Taking into account the 'relatively' high supply of the PS3, and the fact that there is still stock around in the shops, I'm worried that if I buy now, Sony will drop the price to shift this surplus stock not long after I buy.

2, I've heard people complain about the wireless signal strength of the PS3. As I would be using a wireless connection for Internet access on the PS3, this is a worry, as running a wire from my router to PS3 is not really that viable. Is it possible that future hardware updates will include a 'better' wireless card'?

3, IIRC, PS3 settled their conflict with Immersion with respect to using rumble in their controllers? How soon, if at all, do you think it will take for PS3 DualshockAxis (for want of a better word) to come on the market? I wouldn't want to waste too much money buying the non-rumble version if a rumble one does come out.

4, What's the release schedule for the PS3 like for the next few months?

Cheers.

1) The price isn't going to drop anytime soon as Sony is already taking a big loss on each console sold. We may see a price drop in a year possibly if Sony managed to reduce their manufacturing costs. Even that is not very likely.

2) Some people have commented that that get a very weak signal strenght from their PS3's. In all honesty there are several factors involved in this like how far away your router is from your PS3, how many wall/floors the signal has to go through, the quality of your router etc. I'm OK as my router is less two meters from my PS3. I think in general wireless signal should be just fine.

3) It's highly unlikely there will be a control pad with rumble as it would be pointless. Even if Sony were to release one the developers make there games for the lowest common denominator in this case the bundled pad that has no rumble. They aren't going to put in extra time and money into a feature that can't be used by all PS3 owners.

4) Regards release schedule there is no definitive list. The best way to get an idea is to check the various gaming sites and online retailers. However any dates you see have to be taken with a pinch of salt unless officially confirmed by the developer/publisher.

I have to say i was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the wireless connection

I thought i would have to invest in some homeplugs and connect up wired, but as it turns out i got 85-90% signal strength straight out-of-the box, and after changing the channel on my router i now get a pretty much constant 100%

I've used it to play online and downloaded just about every single game/demo/trailer from the PS3 Store with no problems or network drop-outs whatsoever

My router (Orange Livebox) is upstairs in the loft conversion, and the PS3 is downstairs and a couple of rooms to the side, so im VERY impressed with the wireless

I was also wondering about this issue, but this is good news as I've got the Livebox also and from the sound of it a lot closer, with only one door in the way.

Wireless seems ok on my Dlink router, although I did try a Linskys and anther one which i cant remember and struggled with it, but then i also struggled with my lptop with these routers, went back to Dlink and all is well, DL are quick and constantly get 80-100%.

As for price I doubt the price will drop much if any untill afrer xmas then they might not, at the end of the day its selling well so why would they.

Ive always had the attitude if you want it and can afford it get it now, why wait. How long do you wait, if i drops a bit you might wait a bit longr then longer then there will be rumours and the Next next gen then you will wait again and so one ect.

The question is, are there any games you want to play that are on the system now or do you want it as a Blu Ray player?

I don't have any problems with the Wi-Fi, get quite a good signal.

My PS3 came with a extra controller which I sold on, as I'm waiting for the rumble pad to be released.

There are going to be loads of people saying that the PS3 is the best thing since slice bread to justify their purchase. But The fact is there aren't that many good games out now or in the next few months.

The PS3 has great potential, but its going to take a year or two.

If your a hardcore gamer the 360 is the console of choice, baring bad build quality and noise.

If you want and will extensively use a blu ray player then you will not regret the PS3 as a purchase, even if the price does drop somewhat then you can still take comfort from it being considerably less than a decent standalone.

Wireless signal is a little low for me but things do seem to work like the shop... I have the BT homehub located in near line of sight (partially rather than fully obscured by a wall), it's about 8m away and I get low 50% signal strength.

As a gaming machine I would recommend waiting (wish I had that willpower) until there are several titles that really float your boat... it's kind of barren on the software front just now and will not really pick up until the back end of this year. Trouble is that you get one now and you just get a growing sense of frustration about not much being there so even when good stuff does come along then it can be a tad tainted. No doubt by Christmas there will be better value packages available (even if in the form of software bundles rather than base cost reduction) so that would probably be a better pick up point.

If blu ray is your main point in the PS3 then just go for it!

Well, I am a gamer 1st, Movie watcher 2nd.

I have absolutly no regets getting the PS3, it's a very classy and well build console. You get the feeling of quality, everything about it oozes it.

I also don't have any issues with games. I am working through resistance, and enjoying it, and also the online play is good. I enjoy Motorstorm, and am contantly trying to better my lap times in GT:HD, I also have a few downloaded games to play..

Once that lots out the way, I will buy Oblivion (missed it on the 360, as mine had failed by then), and perhaps F.E.A.R (missed than on the PC).

That should last we well into later in the year, when there is a slew of AAA+ titles coming out.

In addition, I use mine for playing downloaded movies, and Blu-Ray. The Wifi works well (only use it to PSP, the net connection is wired).

There are a few areas where 360 has the edge, the 360 dashboard is currently more functional, but at the same time cluttered, I like the simple and clean navigation of the PS3, and like the way Sony implement these features in a logical fashion. I'm sure the PS3 will catch up with most of the 360's dashboard and online features. I also hope they don't totally copy the 360, as the 360 certainly 'aint perfect....

I think increasingly this year, the power of the PS3 will be unleashed, and by this time next year, everything else will be left for dust.

Could someone tell me what Gameplay are like for delivery? Are they fast and reliable? Also, when buying a console online, what are your rights if you need to return it if it's faulty?

Lastly, is the HDMI cable on Gameplay any good?

Cheers.

if you wanna get one, get it!

as with all technology, you can always wait for the next thing, or the next price drop e.t.c e.t.c but if you always did this you would never buy anything.

Gameplay is one of the best online dealers.
I got my 360 from them and it was delivered the next day.
If you are unlucky to get a faulty console you have the same rights as you have from a normal shop.
The HDMI cable is fine.
I see Gamestation are selling ps3 consoles at the same price as gameplay so if there is a gamestation shop near you it might be better to buy from them as it would be quicker and easier if you got a faulty console to get it exchanged.

Im also thinking about this. I might wait as I believe GTA will be released around October, so will get one then, the might even be down in price if the rumours are true.
