    I've ordered a panasonic th42pe50.

Just wondered if it is worth soft modding my xbox to run in hi-def mode?

I know my screen isn't hi-def but will it still look better?

    Cheers :)

Since you can't display the HD mode on your screen, it does not accept 720p on component, there is no point whatsoever. It won't look better, you will get no picture.

    Hi,

Upgrading to hi-def output gives you the options of 480p, 720p, and 1080i output. But given that the vast majority of XBOX games will only output 480p when running through a soft-modded XBOX, it will match up with your plasma perfectly. I soft-modded mine a while back, and it looks really crisp and clear through my Screenplay 5700 projector outputting 480p, I definately notice the difference.

    Cheers

    MAW,

Will it accept a 480p picture though?

    Cheers

It certainly will accept 480p, but you don't need to mod a box to get that.

    MAW,

I am probably going to be shot down in flames, but, given all I have read in the AVForums XBOX forum, and what I have done myself, a normal PAL XBOX will not output 480p. It has to be either soft-modded or chipped to be able to output the NTSC settings of 480p, 720p, 1080i.

I'm just going to duck for cover ;)

    Cheers

Ah, modded for us games maybe. The NTSC 720 is different too, I always thought, but then I'm not an x-box xpert. I don't think there will be any advantage at all in 480p over 576i though, even though it's panel native. I assume UK games are encoded in 576, so scaling is going to take place somewhere. It's an old argument, but no real idea where an x-box sits as a scaling device. Not brilliant I wouldn't have thought.

i think rather than scaling UK games from 576 to 480, it actually runs the graphics at 480p instead (i.e. its in NTSC mode), so no scaling should take place, but i may be wrong

The xbox has to be soft modded or chipped to display any progressive signals, and 480p does look nicer than PAL, not a great deal, I have some screenshots:

Rainbow Six 3 is probably not the best game to show how good Xbox HD looks as the GFX are not great IMHO.

If you look at Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or Halo 2 in 480p it looks fanastic.

I have applied the soft mod on my Xbox and I am very happy with how it looks on my PV500.

Going slightly OT here ... but the xbox 360 is due out in less than 3 months and will output 480p, 720p etc. without any modification.

To get xbox to progressive means not just the soft mod but having to buy the high def. pack as well (afaik you'll need to mail order this as it's not for sale in the UK - since we're not supposed to be able to play games in progressive mode ;) ). So maybe worth saving your pennies for the xbox 360? (which comes with RCA component high-def. cable).

I will try to get some screens from Halo 2, I just wanted to show how clear the image is in progressive scan.

The highdef pack is available in the UK, some online retailers do it. I got mine from here. And at only £25, and if you can find a friend with a softmod memory card, see this thread, it's a lot cheaper than the 360 new. Plus of course your TV only accepts 480p so you wouldn't get the most out of the 360 anyway.

So I'd say go for the upgrade, get the max out of your XBOX. As mal's piccies show, it is better.

    Cheers
