    Hi there,

    I'm looking to buy a M&K THX 7.1 System comprising of: -

    Miller & Kreisel S-5000 THX x 2 (Front L/R)
    Miller & Kreisel S-5000C THX x 1 (Centre)
    Miller & Kreisel SS-500 THX x 4 (4 surround)
Miller & Kreisel MX-5000 MK II THX (Subwoofer)

If I bought this in the UK I figure it will cost me about £10,800. I've found the same system online in the USA for $8,300. If you add import duty at 9%, and VAT at 17.5%, this equates to about $10,650 = £6,962.63. I've got a quote from UPS and they'll ship these boxes to the UK for around £500. This still saves me approx. £4,000.

Are any of my sums wrong, or is there something serious that I've overlooked?

    Ta very much,

    Colin Harrison

Make sure the shipment is insured for the full amount just in case any are damaged in transit.

Doublecheck the sub will work on a UK power supply, USA is 110v. Its possible its a dual 110v/230v supply though.

Be sure to have some sort of transit insurance against breakages etc.

If not, a stepdown transformer should work and they only costs a few pounds.

Thanks guys - I quoted the RRP's for the insured values (UPS have a nifty online quote system where you enter weights, dimensions, and insured value.).

Give them a call and check the price. I recently sent my amp to the UK (and then back here again) and the price paid was higher than the original online price quide.:(

On a negative side is your warranty will probably be only valid in US.

On a positive side, US dollar is quite cheap vs Pound so you,ll save some extra money, that will go long way in offsetting any future cost of repair.

M&K gear is very well built and if you don't overstreach it is unlikely that anything will go wrong with the speakers.

    Good Luck.

    PS. Pay with credit card.

I looked at importing some MK gear also (already been down the import route with a Stewart Screen) the main problem I came up against was MK are so strict with their dealers I couldn't find anybody willing to sell.

Given the amount you'll save though, a quick flight over the pond on a cheapo ticket could do the job!!

As far as the waranty in concerned, the only real concern would be the sub (speakers are either DOA or they work, they dont generally fail after a while) have you looked at buying the sats in the US and the sub in the UK from MK's professional distributor (not Gecko) it'll save you about £700 for the 5000.

    Hpe this helps

    Steve
