Was at Costco tonight and the Philips DVP5980 was on sale for £58.73 inc vat. Not bad...

    My questions are 2 fold:
    1. Why is HDDVD so much cheaper than Blu-Ray?
    2. Am I right in thinking this dvd player plays HDDVDs and has a HDMI output? I checked the box but never gave any details nor was there a display model.

PS - This is my first post on this site WooHoo :suicide:

It does have a HDMI connection, although:-
This is not a HD DVD player. It will only play regular DVD discs.
For HD DVD you will need a dedicated player.
    -
Unscrupulous marketing often describes upscaling players as HD, although they are in fact, not.

I thought that was the case i.e. upscaled to HD but not able to play HDDVD's. I also agree with the marketing ploy... They did it with HD TVs when they weren't HD at all. They will use any loop hole to make you buy something you think is what you want but is in actual fact a fraud... Cheeky Monkeys

    Hi,

Philips dont make HD DVD Players.
Your only options are Toshiba or the XBOX 360 Add-On.
