Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the new baby KEF system 1005 (and my shortlist below)? My wife isn't convinced of the looks and the price of the 2005.2 (though we're still working on that :D ), but I'm now looking at alternatives.
Can anyone comment on these babies? (and how much will I miss out on compared with the 2005.2?)

Other systems on my shortlist are: Mordaunt Short Premier Plus and Canton CD1. I haven't heard any of these yet - just the normal MS Premiers and they were ok. In fact, I haven't run into many people who have heard these systems to comment on.

I'm looking for something good with music and movies at this price point(ish) and size; these are what I've come up with.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    Jim

PS - the sib and cub package is out of the running as well.

This month's Home Cinema Choice reviews the Infinity Oreus sub / sat package and Alvin Gold rather liked it giving it 4.5 stars.

Thanks Ian. Unfortunately, my wife's not keen on the look of the Oreus either. :(
Any thoughts on the others I listed?
    Cheers,
    Jim

No 'egg heads' out there who've heard the 1005's to comment? ;)
I'm hoping to demo both the 1005's and the Premier plus pack next week. But nowhere over here in Northern Ireland seems to carry the Cantons to demo.
    Still looking for advice??
    Cheers,
    Jim

    'Anyone? Anyone? Beuller?'
OK, Seriously, am I going to have to encourage my wife in the direction of the 2005.2 system to get decent results, or will the above mentioned systems be adequate / decent or even quite good for a system? - I'm hoping whatever I get will have longevity - my wife is concerned about the looks of the eggs 'going out of style'.
No one want to comment on my predicament?
    Cheers,
    Jim ;)

I demoed the KHT 1005's on Saturday and I must say I was very very impressed.

Clear sound, thumping bass, very good! Haven't heard the 2005's but the 1005 are quite special.

The 2005's are actually a lot bigger than the 1005's, so the Mrs might not like the size? I would go with te 1005's if I were you, unless you want to spend an extra £300? Can't say I would...but then I'm poor :D

    Thanks Darth,
That's very helpful. I'm not sure if it's the size in addition to the shape or what. When she saw a picture of the 1005's (and the price tag) she was a bit more impressed. Will you be going for a set of 1005's yourself?
Would appreciate any other opinions - and thanks in advance.
    Jim ;)

Well, I've already got a sub, so I can get five 2005 eggs for £395 which is £55 cheaper than getting the whole 1005 set up.

So I'm still debating what to do as I've heard the 2005 eggs are much better sound wise, but I haven't demoed them so I don't know yet.

I have the Kef 2005.1 speakers and I like em - sure I'd like big floor standers but for what you get for the cash they are great. btw; dont get the sub that goes with them - buy the speakers seperately or as a whole but without the sub ;)

The are good for both stereo and movies as long as your sub is good.

The Kef 1005s are not particularly great speakers at all. Very thin and bright sounding and the sub is just a boom box with very little actual control or subtlety. I would recommend you book a demo of the 2005.2s which are far superior. Another recommendation would be the Monitor Audo Radius speaker package wich have really nice wood finishes and as such tend to be a little bit more wife friendly.

Problem with the 2005's though is that they are £300 more than the 1005's, can't justify spending that much more I don't think.

Can you think of a similar set/size for around £300-400?

    Darth,
I've been asking myself the same question, and the best I've been able to come up with (for movies and music) is the shortlist above. I'm welcome to other suggestions for smallish systems. Maybe I should have the Aego 5 speaker system here. Don't know. Unfortunately the leads supplied in that package are not long enough, especially the all important one to connect the preouts of the reciever to the sub. :(

How long are the cables supplied? Might be ok for me, I don't need a lot of cable.

    Darth,
The contents listing from the Aego5 manual here states:

    1 x AEGO5 subwoofer
    5 x AEGO5 Satellite Speakers
    5 x Wall Brackets
4 x rubber feet for subwoofer
    1 x Multi-way signal cable 3M (6 x RCA Phono to 1 x Multi-pin)
    1 x Speaker lead 3.5M
    2 x Speaker leads 5.5M
    2 x Speaker leads 10M
    1 x Owners manual
    1 x Car Sticker

Unfortunately, I am concerned about placing the sub behind my TV(which is in a recessed corner) because of potential 'boom'. The only other option is beside my sofa, opposite the TV. That would require some 9M of cable (presumably the 'multi-way signal cable' that it says is only 3M). I would also need one of my sat cable lengths to be 13M because of room layout. Lastly, the manual says the sats sound best attached to the wall with the supplied brackets, and my wife prefers stands (doesn't want speaker wire trailing, etc. - my DIY skills leave something to be desired).
So there you have it. I think I might be snookered with that speaker system.
    Hope this helps you.
    Jim

To say it is "Very thin and bright sounding " doesn't help much when you are recomending speakers that are better that are nearly twice as much!

I could say the same about the 2005.2 if I was comparing speakers that cost £1200.....

Not that reviews really matter but those Kef 2005.1 won many (many) awards in there time, and used to be raved about here on these forums......

    CaM

    p.s. I'm keeping them for now ;)
