Got your attention with that rather dubious thread title ! Well it's the unexpected out of charector moments that can shock the audience on first watch for example.

Quint , and his demise that I didn't expect on my first watch many moons ago. Lukes daddy in Star Wars , but what I'm getting at is the like of the assassination of Axel Foley mate in Beverly Hills Cop that seems out of charector with the rest of the film. Drive for example came out of the blue with the verosity of the lift scene.

Just some examples and they do not have to shock for shock value, just unexpected moments that shocked you at the time.

Out of character ? And or shock ? It Was the whole idea and point of the film.

    LA Confidential
    oh no, not Spacey!
    sixth sense
well, the twist is so popular that its become old hat but man, it really was a spine chilling shock revelation
The village (not the ending but
the stabbing of Phoenix character, that really jolted me
Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit
I remember being as shocked as Hoskins when I saw who Roger's girlfriend turned out to be and that sultry introduction act was in a class of its own.
    Oldboy original version
that revelation was sick! I literally stumbled out of the cinema as I left. I hated the movie for that ending but no mistake in its deliberacy and I have to say it, masterfulness to shock.
    Happy Feet
Such a fun film and then suddenly turns so dark, when he ends up in that zoo, I felt a real cold cold chill which in a way was a shock. Knowing its George Miller after watching the film makes sense.

Huh ? The whole film was the ultimate shock tactic gimmick. If that's what you're saying, then yeah I agree.

I agree that violent shocks are always worse outside of the horror genre (I think that's what raduv1 was getting at when Serbian Film got brought up). The examples above: Drive, Irreversible, Pans Labyrinth we're appalling because they weren't horror or fantasy scenes- which brings them uncomfortably close to home. Couple to add:

    Kill List
The hammer torture scenes. ****. Absolutely nothing left to the imagination. The final scene/ hunchback reveal is also horribly disturbing

    Trainspotting
Begbie glassing that poor bloke who spilled his pint. That made me feel sick as its the kind of scenario any of us could face.

    Only God Forgives
Torture scene. When the women in the room are told to close their eyes, you know something grisly is going to happen and NWR does not disappoint...

    Within horror/ fantasy
    Robocop
    Emile dissolving in toxic waste
    .

    The Fly
    The baboon turned inside out

    Star Trek The Motion Picture
    Transporter accident
. Horrendous. You wouldn't find a scene like that in a modern trek film that's for sure.

    Shutter Island
the reveal that Teddy Daniels is Andrew Laeddis, followed by the awful flashback to him discovering his children drowned in the lake.

    Invasion of the Body Snatchers
that final shot of Donald Sutherland- gives me the willies!

    Jaws
    the head scene
    and the moment when
Bruce emerges from the water while Brody is chumming.

    Raiders of the Lost Ark
"Close your eyes, Marion. Don't look at it whatever happens"

    The Mist

Killing his son in the car then the "monsters" he hears turn out to be the army and the loon from the store is staring at him as he screams in despair. The end.

Better than the original story ending!

    Body Double
although not seeing it when you see the drill and the blood coming though the floor you knew what was happening.

    Seconds
    The end scene

    Frenzy
    the rape and strangulation scene

    The Parallax View
the poisoning of the editor and the death of the WB

All four above made my blood run cold.

    Night of the running man.
The dam scene, the poor woman had nothing to do but be friends with someone and got that.

    Alien
Three of a kind Sooty Alien spoof

Quite a Few of the deaths in both the Dr Phibes films.

    Screem and Screem Again
The Jogger body parts keep getting amputated, and Peter Cushing and Alfred Marks.

    Paint it Black
Sally Kirkland just after being a right cow recants and does something nice to rectify it but still gets suffocated

    You Only Live Twice
Karin Dor getting fed to the piranhas

    James Bond general comment.
Seem near a running theme in most of the James Bond films that at least one of the ladies/females gets bumped off for some sort of shock value although I think every one was very, no, extremely ecstatically happy when Rosa Kleb got shot:clap:.

    And of course.

    Planet of the Apes.
PLANET OF THE APES (1968) - Lady Liberty Destroyed

Brilliant. I watched it with my son and girlfriend recently, neither had ever seen it before, and they both gasped out loud at that point.

OK I know this is not a film so forgive me for indulging myself so I'll just come out and say it

Game of Thrones, The Red Wedding was and still is the most shocking and unexpected scene I've seen in for a long time in anything I've seen over the last few years.

It just needed to be added........sorry.

Out of respect for the Legend that was Sir Chrirstopher Lee I might add The Wicker Man to this and
the horrible demise of Edward Woodward
that was unexpected and shocking at the time. I do believe that some members might remember another scene though that was a wee bit shocking for its time .

Talking of which the scene when
the baby was born left me speechless. I thought for a moment: did they actually just film a live birth?
    Incredible fx work.
