    Hi there,

My first post so go gentle ;)

I've been offered a Sherwood R-925 from a mate for £120, I know this is as a bargain but the amps 4 years old now. Is this a good first amp to enter the DD/DTS world with? I'm currently only using Dolby Pro Logic on my TV so it's gonna be a big step whatever. Anything I should look out for when checking it out???

    Thanks

    Thief.

All I would say is find another friend!!
Joking aside,it was a super little amp in its day but now it is a bit out of date with the lack of DTS which is now such a common feature.
I owned one from new and paid £400 for it when it first came out as it was the cheapest to offer Dolby Digital at the time as well as having an RF connection for laserdisc.
If all you have is Pro Logic at the moment you will find DD a real revelation, but the trouble is you will soon yearn for DTS,dont say you wont cause you will, its always better to have more options!
All I can say is at the end of the day its up to you but I would say to your mate that if you are my friend you would let me have it for cheaper than £120! :D

i agree with the guys, u really want an amp that offers dts the sherwood 4 years ago was a very good entry amp i nearly bought one myself but nowadays its probably worth £75.00, i sold my sony srdb 925 for £100.00 2 years ago which was a lot better than the sherwood, may be look for a second hand one of those .

    good luck

Well I have to say my experience with the r-925 has only been positive. I admit that its features are somewhat out of date- no pro logic 2, no dts, not a sniff of any kind of rear centre channel, perhaps most criminally no 5.1 inputs-
BUT, if all you are planning to do with it is watch a few dvds and a bit of telly, maybe the odd cd, I think its a bargain. Any dvd you buy with dts audio will also feature ac3, and for this price the added quality over the pro logic you are used to will be a revelation. To pay double the money to get a dts amp clearly is not worthwile given the extra performance boost it will give you. In fact, even with music I have found the r-925's stereo delivery effortless and enjoyable. I would try and get him down to £100 though, simply because its a bit of a cumbersome ugly beast compared to the sort of receiver £400 will buy you nowadays.
Oh and make sure your speakers are 8 ohm, if memory serves it isn't rated for 4 ohm speakers. ;-)

Richer Sounds are selling Yamaha RXV396RDS for £139.95. This is a Dolby Digital amp that also doesn't decode DTS but for an extra £20 you will be buying something brand new that is better than the Sherwood.

i have to agree with the others on this.

at the time it was a way to get a DD amp for under £500, this was undercutting the competion by nearly half.

i had one , for about a week, it really isnt the best thing you can get for the money even at that price. Ian J said you can get the yamaha for £139 and if they have an openbox unit , ie been used to demo or on display, they will knock another tenner off it.

it isn't just the DD steering etc. the transformer in it isn't very good and it clips the speakers at the sort of volumes you will be wanting to go to.

look for somthing a little better.

to put it into perspective I upgraded it after a week to the kenwood that richer had on offer at the time,a massive improvement, it was reduced to £499 from £799 i think, and i sold this 2 and a half years ago for £100 and thought i had got a good price. things move on.

Well Im interested in getting a 5.1 (or better DD amp) thats good for not much money (the holy grail). I will upgrade at a later date so Im looking at second hand / Richer sounds atm. Someone has offered me a Sherwood 925 for around £100 and I've just been informed (look up) that I could get a new Yamaha thats better for about £30 more. I just need something reasonable thats cheap (to start with). I'll be using KEF Q1s all round.

    Thanks

All I would say is that if you are planning to upgrade again from the Yamaha at some stage that stick to the Sherwood for the time being.
I think it would be a bit pointless to buy the 396 for £130(?) if you are going to change it again later and most of the time Richer sounds advertise stuff which they dont have stock for anyway so you might have problems getting the 396 at all.
Offer £90 cash for the 925,go and wave the money in his face that usually works!

before you go waving your money in his face.

if you are going to upgrade in the next couple of months, then stick with what you have.

if you are going to keep this amp for 6 months or more buy the yamaha.

I didnt want to say this before but , i used to work for RS when the DD amps started to come out and out of all 20+ that we had in stock this came out the worst by a very long shot in a blind listening test we did one evening , it was even beaten by the harmon HK100 which was only pro logic.

Now i dont want to offend ayone who may be using one, but in my opinion , this amp sux , and i mean sux , as i said before i took one home for a week, because i was sure i could make it sound good, and for £240 the staff price, I was going to have a bloody good go.
but after a week of messing about with the settings i gave up and bought a kenwood 888 or somthing.

seriously buy the yammy take it home, get the sherwood and compare them.

take the yammy back to RS if you want 14 day refund.
and if he is a mate he will let you try it for a night :)

    Hmmm,

Decisions decisions. This is the state of affairs. My girlfriend and I are about to move house (maybe). I would like DD in the living room in the new house and spending lots of money on house things Im not gonna have £650 for the 3802 ;) I figure, buy a cheap DD amp for 6 months or so then upgrade. so like you say I might look at the Yammy from RS. Although you said you worked for RS, you could still be bias :p

    Dave

    Thanks :)

for £70 you dont need to listen to it.

and as for finish there is only one, black.

chris has been on these forums for a while now and i would trust it is what he says it is. and he isnt going to rip you off for a few quid, now if it was £70k he might ;)
