    Hi,

It was re-released to tie-in with the Channel 4 UK TV premiere of the film, which was shown about three weeks ago.

Where's the best place to get the R1 version of this great film? My usual supplier (Play247) only seems to have the region 2 which is in surround, not 5.1 like the R1 ?

Three weeks ago? Channel 4 have shown Shawshank at least twice before haven't they? They made a big deal of it this time around, but I'm sure it wasn't the premiere. And would its re-release really have anything to do with it being shown on TV?

    C Pointon,

It was the terrestrial TV premiere, but it has been shown on numerous occasions on FilmFour, which is probably where you're getting a bit confused.

As for re-releasing a title to correspond with a TV showing, it's a failry common practice within the video trade. Check out how many stores will be promoting or highlighting "Jackie Brown" in some way, as of tomorrow morning, after tonights terrestrial TV premiere of it on C4!

I've heard that the region 4 release of the film is the version to go for. Far better than the R2 in terms of picture quality (I own it), and it has a Dolby Digital 5.1 track.

And id you look at the Australian exchange rate, it's pretty cheap from places like EzyDVD and DeVoteD.

    C Pointon is right!!!

I have got a VHS tape with it on that I recorded from the TV about 18 months ago. And as I don't have Satalite/Digital/cable then it would be impossible for me to record it from Film Four!

    Meat,

If that is the case, then on what station did you tape it off? The reason I ask, is not that I don't believe you, but that I got my info from both the Radio Times and C4 themselves, who have told me they have NEVER shown this film on any other station, bar FilmFour, until their recent airing!

I am sure i have seen it on the BBC a number of times. I always used to catch it halfway through and have to watch it to the end. I dont rememeber any breaks for adverts so thats why i think it was BBC.

    quote from the Guardian website

"Viewers were spoiled for drama choice last night. Channel 4's Sunday night movie, The Shawshank Redemption, attracted a whopping 3.5m viewers and a 19% audience share between 9pm and 11.40pm."

I also remember seeing it on Channel 4

I would bet my sister that It's been on Channel 4 before. I'm not confusing it with Film Four because I'm not daft enough to pay £5 a month for a channel showing the odd decent movie between spacefilling fartsy films all the time (no, i don't like F4).

Anyone want to take that bet, by the way?

BBC2 I think as there aren't any adverts and it is framed at 16x9. I couldn't have been on Ch4 as my TV doesn't switch to wide when I play it!

I shall look it out tonight and post tomorrow. The Radio Times and Ch4 my be wrong you know!

    C Pointon,

You said: "I would bet my sister that It's been on Channel 4 before. I'm not confusing it with Film Four because I'm not daft enough to pay £5 a month for a channel showing the odd decent movie between spacefilling fartsy films all the time (no, i don't like F4)."

Oooh, that sounds like someone who only likes dull, no-brain films like "Armageddon" and those crappy Jean Claude Van-Damme or Steven Seagal films. Maybe you ought to look at FilmFour's output, and you will see that it is far from "fartsy" films!

As for your bet, I am happy to accept the fact that I may be wrong, but seeing as several people seem to recall this being on before, on another terrestrial channel, I won't take you up on the bet.

    Pooch

P.S. Your bet doesn't say much about the love you have for your siblings, does it?! :D

I like thought provoking, intelligent films and don't switch off because something has subtitles or is **** in black & white. Film 4 does have some very good content, but it also has some absolutely abysmal stuff, and in my view just is not worth the £6 a month subscription. I should have made the 'in my opinion' disclaimer in my last post. As for van Damme... he should be professionally castrated - if he hasn't been yet.

Mindless movies have their place when well done, but I'm not into no-brainers. Arnie and Claude are finally taking up their rightful places in the video store. Same for that Steven 'Speak Up!' Seagal bloke.

    I'm just cheap.

I think it says everything about the love I have for my sibling.

    Why was **** processed as a swear word? That's S h o t ? Weird.

    Great movie!

Bought this last week, and watched it with my daughter, who loved it. She doesn't usually watch films at all.

But.. this ITV disc was the worst DVD I have ever come accross..

The picture was like a VHS image!!! It had white lines around the images like photon shields. The DVD was stereo as well. Is it faulty?

Well I don't think it is actually faulty, but I don't know how they got it to look this bad.

    Great Movie! :smashin:

Don't buy the stereo DVD!!! :thumbsdow

ITV disc? sounds like someone taped it off TV on VHS and burnt a DVD. I've had two DVD versions, the original vanilla and the 3 disc edition, and both have been perfectly fine. Wasn't it a Channel 4 film in the first place anyway?

It must have been ITV originally. The DVD even starts off with the Carlton logo!!!

I doubt if it's a pirate.. I bought it from Tescos. Anyway, if I recoded it off TV it would look better than the DVD.

If it starts of with any TV logo except Channel 4 films it is recorded off the TV.

Wow, remind me to totally avoid their titles in the future. Not content with broadcasting rubbish at an awful bit rate they are now contaminating home cinema too.:thumbsdow
