Setup of older LCD data projector?

I've got myself a secondhand Panasonic PT-L595 LCD data projector. It has quoted ANSI Lumens of 700 (although I suspect it is a bit less) and a contrast ratio of 200:1.
I've seen posts saying people have really improved their projectors's picture tweaking the settings, what are the areas to change.
And what screen suggestions would people have? I was looking at the Icestorm paint route and was wondering if I should try 5, 5+6, or 6 as I am not sure if it is bright enough for a grey screen. Any suggestions are very welcome.
