Got another xxls400 coming and wondered how I will set them up.

Room positions I have an idea about.

I think you should gain match subs as far as possible?

I was going to calibrate one sub in the avr to -3db point. Then switch it off and calibrate other sub to -3db also.
Then switch both subs on and run calibration aiming for 0db.

However I realise the amount of GAIN will be different slightly for each sub even if they are VOLUME matched.

So is there a better 'right' way I can do this using just the AVR (Sony DN 1050)?

    Cheers:)

Connect both subs and then use the receiver's auto calibration. It helps if you keep the distances from the primary listening position to each sub equidistant. Look at locating the subs symmetrically within the room.

Got the second sub today. I just whacked each sub on 1/2 gain then ran calibration. Weirdly the AVR set them to +1db which sounded way too hot with music at any rate, I've turned them down to -4db or so to sound better integrated.

Will need to check there is enough LFE in films having done this. It doesn't appear in the GUI that the Sony acknowledges there are two subs. It just treats it as one large sub.

For this reason at least with the Sony, you need to have them equidistant from the MLP as I have done

Yes, most receivers with dual sub pre outs don't acknowledge that there are 2 subs. The signal is simply split in 2 at the point just before the outputs on the rear of most receivers. Only the higher tier receivers calibrate both subs independently of one another.

The level is in accordance with reference and the receiver measures the cumulative output of both subs simultaneously to arrive at the level it sets.

Just don't get why they needed a boost. Although I did take one sub out the corner so I guess it's lost a lot of GAIN from doing that.

I would not bother just connecting both subs. Invest in an spl meter and set them up correctly as mis matched outputs can cause cancellation which will not help the room correction.

Yeh I'll have to do that soon. Have to say dual subs are great, I notice less nulls now, all bass sounds rich and 'complete' if you will.

Mad Max fury road was ferocious and it's all so easy with two subs sharing the load. Recommended

Dont listen to the whole avr will do the job. As unless you have arc dirac xt32 it just cant do sub eq.

Oh the Sony does nothing to the subs apart from distance and level.

Just did the edge of tomorrow intro bass sweep.
Mouth open mode:D love these subs!
