According to Media Week and Inside Freeview aswell as digiLOOK,
Setanta Sports will be coming to Freeview on channel 15 as of October this year. The new channel, which will broadcast a combination of live sport, documentaries and archive footage, is expected to go live toward the end of the year on the digital terrestrial platform, which currently has Sky Sports News as its only dedicated sports channel. :D

That's a great shame as I was hoping Freeview would be a safe haven for people like me who actively avoid watching football and other sports programs.

Am I alone in wanting Freeview to be a sports free zone?

If you like watching sport get Sky.

    Great news.
Freeview is looking better and better.
Just hope they show some worthwhile sport and not just football.
I want some good motor racing of some sort.

No. There's two of us. But I suspect we are in a minority amongst the great unwashed. :(

Like every genre of programming there are always people that don't like it and the obvious thing to do is not watch the channel, after all it's not going to be a situation where programming is pre-empted for sports like the BBC and ITV does.

Freeview needs a wide selection of channels, a sports channel even one like this is great news for the platform and congratulations to Setana for going where Eurosport and a few others haven't. I also have no doubt the addition of some sports will tip the balance in a few households when deciding if Freeview is worth considering when going digital.

Surely a sports channel is better than another shopping channel or second rate music channel or even worse an empty screen?

I wouldn't use "sports" and "better" in the same sentence. I want "Discovery" (I just love those repeats) so I can cancel my Sky Subscription. There's only a limited number of slots for Freeview and I hate the thought of any being wasted.

    :p

Count me in. That makes three.

One channel dedicated (plus any number of other 'normal' channels that are rescheduled, run late, and so on whenever anything 'significant' happens in Sport) is more than enough.

All sport should be fully self-funding, like any other form of entertainment. NO taxpayer's money should go towards any aspect of it (and I'm not talking about TV coverage here).

I'd sooner have seen the bandwidth used for a dedicated OAR movie channel without any logos on it.

    I too can't stand sport.

The only good I can possibly see from this is attracting more viewers which may provide more incentive for "better" channels to try and get in the Freeview lineup.

I cannot believe 24 missed a week due to golf  !!

I am of mixed minds on this.

    a) It seems a good idea but

    b) I'd prefer a documnetry or film channel

However FV could do with a general sport channel as Sky Sports News don't count.

I hate football and that is all that I have ever seen on SSN - should be SFN

I'll grant you that one. F1 can hold my attention for up to 20 minutes, occasionally. But it has become less interesting since they changed the rules. I *like* technology. I want to see the suspension and everything controlled by computer and let the best computer programmer win! In fact they could do away with the human drivers. Do it all by remote control and we'd see a lot more horrendous crashes without anyone being hurt. :p

personally i cant see much football being shown as you have to pay for all of that even with the subscription on cable or sky it would be good with a bit of rallying and motorbikes and maybe the occasional crash bang wallop program they are funny as long as they all get up after it!

Eurosport used to great for sideline motorsport Tractor pulling DTM etc Freeveiw is rapidly becoming a competitor to subscription TV!!! Live Le mans and coverage of the GT season would be great i much prefer to watch GT cars than F1 although Malaysia was good!!!!(this year~)

I agree with all the above. Football holds no intrest for me either.
But my only question is, what sort of sport will be on this channel? I can only see it being similar to Eurosport.

While there are plenty of people who don't like sport - and very few people who like all sports - it is about choice. I personally hate most soap opera's and would love Eastenders, Corrie etc. to be removed from the schedules. This is not going to happen cos lots of other people disagree with me so I just accept it. Same goes for people who don't like sport/football.

It's still a surpeise that the best Motorsports channel avaliable through SKY D is MotorsTV and is FTA. It would certainly suit DTT down to the ground but in all honesty it is a cheapish channel on digital satellite (Low bitrate/some telesales) and probably couldn't afford carriage on the DTT platfrom.
Easter Monday, Live BTCC/Formula Ford/Carrera Cup with Ben Edwards doing the commentary and Vicki Butler-Henderson doing interviews. Incredible line up for a FTA channel and puts both the BBC and ITV to shame.

I can't believe people are complaining about a genuine main stream channel coming to Freeview. It must help Freview reach genuine critical mass. WHo would buy Freeview to watch Bid up TV, QVC, Sky travel or even most of the purile FTN? Whether you like sport or not, you should be happy that it will help establish Freeview in the mind of the nation as a genuine alternative.

And why should sports fans have to pay Sky or cable to see their team? I personally disagree with pay TV full stop and wont get Sky or Cable on principle, am totally fed up with repeats so don't want a 'Gold' channel on Freeview, would rather hire a DVD to watch the film I want rather than waste a channel on some tat that's been on TV 20 times before. Oh dear, I seem to have gone down the the toys out the pram route of the sports bashers. Lets remember guys and girls Freeview should be abroad church not narrow minded. Live and let others have some choice.

imo a sport channel would be ok, just as long as its not 99% football, golf, snooker and tennis because we already get enough of that.
im waiting for that cheese rolling thing, and maybe some if that japaneese enudrance stuff :rotfl:

Thinking about this more this is what Freeview needs

A music channel playing videos of chart hits - good for background

    We have 2.

    News channels

    We have 3

    General Sports

We will be getting Setanta, just hope there is a good mix!!!!

    Documentries

UK History - we need another, non history more general showing stuff similar to Horizon or Equinox

    General Entertainment

    Ftn, BBC3

    Lifestyle

    UK Brightideas

    Childrens

2 so far - could do with 1 totally different (with no seasick logo)

    As to the following

Shopping - don't need - except one for a laugh
Sports - need general not football only
    Remove Bidup now!
Films - difficult this - Pan & Scan or Letterboxed into 4x3 sound like they would be used, however they almost certainly be logoed as well:thumbsdow.

This would be acceptable as OAR Anamorphic no logo, but I don't think a film channel would work.

For example the Community Shield (Charity Shield) is on today on setanta but you can stream it live on LEQZ

I dunno why people are moaning. This is good news as far as am concerned. As for those of you who don't like it, you can always SKIP/DELETE the channel from your set up.:)

Setanta Sports is on channel 34 on freeview and has been for some time.
It is an encrypted channel and requires a £10.99 per month subscription fee along with the CAM and viewing card to view it.
You will find that this channel is unencrypted before a big live sporting event but will become encypted as soon as the event starts.

    Just what I was wondering.
No reason that I can see except to give a link to some streaming TV site and a lot of these sites (I'm not saying the linked one is) are dodgy and loaded with malware

Agreed - its just a shame they sometimes employ the frankly whack Carlton Kirby. Thats the only downside to Motors. What other channel bring you club level hillclimbing from Gurston Down, saving me a 15 minute drive to see it?
