    :hiya:

The rule of thumb is that sequels are normally no where near as good as their originals. However this is not always true. Here are a few examples,

    Resident evil 2
    Terminator 2
    Evil Dead 2
    Aliens
    Empires Strikes back
    Batman Begins

Does anyone else know of any sequels that are better than their originals?

Terminator 2 is not better than Terminator! Evil Dead 2 is a remake, so I wouldn't count that as a true sequel. Batman Begins isn't a sequel either (or a prequel). I'd consider it the first of a new series.

On topic, The Godfather Part 2, X-Men 2 and Return of the King.

    I can't fully agree

Isn't Batman Begins is a pre sequel and Empire Strikes Back part of a trilogy (or saga) lol, but yes. Alien and Aliens are both great films and I wouldn't like to say one is better than the other, just different styles. And I still perfer Evil Dead one as it had less comedy in it.

I also agree on Terminator 2, but can't make my mind up on the Resident evil films

I found Spiderman 2, X-men 2, Mad Max 2 better than the first ones off the top of my head.

I am too busy watching Police academy 58 to answer any more questions. [IMG]

I prefered Toy Story 1 for story and No. 2 for visuals.

I also thought that scream 3 was level with scream 1. Scream 2 was the worst of the trilogy.

    Couldn't agree more.
T1, although made on a budget, was uncompromising right to the end. A true cult classic.

T2 - Yes, big budget, great effects - but all the usual cop outs. As soon as I saw it was 15 I knew it was going to be the usual hollywood recipe. Then the streetwise kid to cater for the younger market - aaaghh. And when he came out with "don't kill anybody" my heart sank. Then the cringe making end scene "now I know why you cry" and the thumbs up - well, come on guys.

Still a good popcorn movie, but not in the same class as the first.

Think the whole Terminator and Alien thing will always be a matter of opinion. Yes, the originals were groundbreaking, yes they were fantastic, yes they were remarkeable achievements for the budget they had.

But the sequels were better films... :D

    Games Guru :hiya:

True, but it is still better than the other Batmans.

Shocked no one thinks T2 is better than T1

    Hartigan :hiya:

Shrek 2 was good but I disagree about Blade 2. Blade 2 was a good film but I prefered Blade 1.

Blade 1 got silly at the end.

Blade 2 has more action, and fantastic sound!

Right.... And what medication are you taking again..? ;)

Have you seen the original ending on the DVD? Very silly.

Test audiences rejected it. The replacement was designed to keep the 'human (vampire) element'. But still silly.

    Just my opinion... :D

Dawn of the Dead, better than Night of the Living Dead?

Much of this is subjective, but I think everyone agrees that Alien and Aliens are good films, as is T1 and T2. Which one is better depends upon what type of film you prefer....dark atmospheric sci-fi or big effects action-fests (they both have their merits!)

Who prefers MI:2 over the first Mission Impossible? I dont personally, but the box office did. How about Bourne Identity or Bourne Supremacy? (I actually prefer Supremacy)

Finally one for GaryD, 2046 or In the Mood for Love? I'm going to upset you by saying 2046 (Ziyi Zhang does it for me! ;) )

definately bourne supremacy over identity... i saw supremacy in the cinema after about 40 hrs awake where the jittery camera in the fight scenes was threatening to make me sick and i still managed to love it...

for me Alien > Aliens, i also have a weird liking for Alien 3 tho, so im not sure i can be trusted...

standout bad sequels for me have to be robocop 2+3 , blade trinity, tremors 3+4, and any number more...

MI:2: i thought was far worse than the original

Empire better than A New Hope ? No! No! No! No! No!
Revenge of the sith was the best of the prequel trilogily.

    Agree with
    Godfather 2
    Spiderman 2
    Shrek 2

I also prefer Rambo 2 to First Blood.

Worst sequel ever was Highlander 2 - total dross.

PLEASE tell me you are joking with Res Evil 2, Terminator 2, Aliens, Star Trek 4 and Die Hard 2:Die Harder............

I was with you when you said Alexander isn't that bad (which it isn't - I can name LOTS worse, although I am biased towards anything with Ms. Jolie in it, but then everyone knows that).

All we need is someone saying Halloween 2 and Alien Vs Predator as "better sequels"......

You need slapping, to wake you from the delusion you're in.

First Blood is the best film Stallone has ever done.

Smokey and the Bandit 2 , possibly. I haven't decided yet.

Well technically AVP is the start of a new franchise. Read in SFX that work was being started on AVP2.

Technically I know that (and personally don't even contemplate it being part of either Aliens or Predator movies, but it's a spin-off regardless).
