Why do we now have separate console forums?

I think a general gaming forum worked so well?

Because the PSP is going to be huge and demands it's own forum.
Also because we're putting more resources into the gaming forums and the major consoles deserve their own community forums.

If it is going to stay this way could a moderator sort the threads out, as many of them are in the wrong gaming section.

Yeah I'm aware of that, but it's a big job.
If you could post a list of links to threads which need to be moved and to which forums, we can make a start.

I wouldn't mind doing that at all mate.

I go on the gaming forums a lot, so know about the different games and which format each game is on, so it might no be as immediately obvious to someone else ( a moderator) who doesn't have such an affinity to games.

Personally I think the new layout is great! Gaming is going to become bigger & bigger with the next gen of consoles and it makes a lot of sense to break them down into sections.

Multi format games can be discussed in whichever section is relevant to the version that you are playing. The different versions are not usually identical anyway and there may be console specific points relating to each version.

It makes sense for X-Box owners not to have to trawl through Gamecube & PS2 posts (and vica versa) just to find something relevant IMO.

I have to say I disagree Cas. Given the volume of people that check the gaming forums is relatively low (after all this is an AV site) I just don't see how breaking the forums into different formats makes sense. After all, if you look at the biggest gaming forums in the UK (rllmuk; gamesradar; ntsc-uk) - none of them break down the threads by format.

Do you not consider video gaming to be 'audio visual home consumer electronics'?
This is a forum more oriented towards grown-ups. I consider that group of people to include both the folks who have been gaming for long while (since virtually the start of video gaming), and parents who's kids are enjoying video games.
This group of people will have a larger disposable income than younger people and they appreciate the guidance of like minded gamers and parents of gamers.
As a result, the gaming forums here, while not as focussed or as busy as the dedicated gaming sites, allow people to talk about gaming in the context of their complete home entertainment systems.
The PSP, for example, is capable of 7.1 sound. Although I don't see a way of feeding a home cinema system with the output as yet.

Out of interest Stuart, will you be getting a PSP and why do you think it will be so big considering the significant price tag?

I really don't see what the problem is in having different sections. Like Stuart mentioned, it allows people to focus on the equipment they have so that if someone is looking to integrate an X-Box into their system then they can click on the relevant section.

People tend to be quite brand focused with their consoles and you used to get too many people hijacking threads bragging about their X-box in a PS2 thread and vica versa. This way they are kept separate so that PS2, GC and X-Box fans all have their own section to post in.

I'm also liking the new format. It will keep the number of flamewars to a minimum and comments about whats better than what will be less volatile as well, i'm sure comments such as "The PS3 is more powwerful than the xbox360 which means it r0x0rz" to be replied with "yeah, but it looks like bread bin" etc etc won't be as common place anymore. So really with this new layout things should be a lot more pleasant

I've been away for a week so haven't had a chance to answer till now.

I completely agree with your comments regarding gaming becoming more and more related to AV. Anyone looking at the specs of the X360 and PS3 shows exactly where consoles are headed.

I am also one of those people that has grown with the industry from its geeky days to one that is generally more accepted today (although I feel there is still a long way to go). As you mentioned, people like me have higher disposable incomes and therefore can afford more. Likewise, I have all 3 major consoles.

However, whilst I agree that the group here is more mature and I haven't seen many flamers here, I still don't see the point of separate console threads. Ultimately games are becoming more and more a multi-format experience (well many titles at least appear on PS2 and Xbox, if not Gamecube). In my eyes, it doesn't make sense that if you were following a thread about a particular game in the Xbox forum, that you'd then have to start a thread about the same game in the PS2 thread. Kind of defeating the purpose imo.

You mention the PSP several times, however from what I've seen so far nothing guarantees it will be the gargantuan seller that everyone thinks. Recent reports in Japan suggest that Nintendo's DS is still the preferred handheld console of choice. I'm not denying that it will sell bucketloads, I just doubt that it will be as popular as the ipod, that's all.

Well it seems to me that under the old setup it was almost impossible to talk about one format, without the fanboys of another format coming in to spoil the thread with silly comments about their format instead. Many threads turned into an X-Box v PS2 or DS v PSP debate when really there was no need for them to.

It seems that the majority prefer this format although naturally, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I’m not completely against this format, I just thought the more general format was more intuitive.
