I asked about this in the main forum general chat section but it occurred to me that there might be some specialist advice available here.

I'm looking for a delivery service (within the UK) which will accept - and, crucially, offer compensation insurance on - a sizeable lens.

Every company I've investigated specifically says that objects made of, or containing, glass cannot be covered and must be sent at my own risk.

Is there a solution to this?

    Many thanks,

    Bert

I always use Royal Mail Special Delivery, you can get compensation upto £2,500 I believe with that. Last lens I sent went in it's original box first, I then bubble wrapped that and then that went in another box. Overkill maybe but better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for that. I just looked at their site: I was sure I'd been there already and seen a list of non-insurable items which included glass, but this time I couldn't find it, so perhaps I was dreaming. Someone on the general chat forum suggested emailing them and asking specifically, so that's what I've done.

I couldn't gree more. Have you ever been in the unfortunate position of having a lens or similar lost or damaged?

    Ahoy!

RMSD definately. And you can increase the insurance value from the standard £500.00 (inclusive) and pay the additional premium. Better safe than sorry!

I've sent and received £1000.00 lenses and cameras with them. It's a bit of a 'no-brainer'.

    Definately Royal Mail special delivery,

I wrap well in box, bubble wrap and place in a further box, If youve bought from amaxon their boxes are good. Mark as fragile or handle with care,

I always do, but remain totally unconvinced that it makes any difference whatsoever.

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks as though Royal Mail Special Delivery is definitely the right option.

RMSD is handled separately to other Royal Mail services and is probably the safest and most reliable option.

Get yourself along to somewhere like Staples and get yourself a suitable sized box and decent packing materials (should cost around £6 in total) to be absolutely sure of no breakages.

Such a pity we can't teleport stuff, I've got half a room full of various packing boxes and about 100 meters of bubble wrap :D

Thanks for the thought, but if we could teleport stuff, presumably I could just despatch the lens directly to its destination with no wrapping whatsoever...

It would be great, wouldn't it? Where's Scotty when you really need him?

I'd teleport myself to a jessops store room, pickup a Nikon D3x and 17-35 2.8 and teleport out again before they found out :)
