Selling Your Reasonably New Car

As stocks are relatively low it is a good time to sell your car, but in my experience when I do this privately you need to patience of a saint to deal with opportunists who pretend to be private buyers but hit you with the low end of trade in prices. And whilst for older cars selling privately on Autotrader or eBay or Car and Classic and the likes may be fine, I found it more difficult for slightly newer cars; say upto 5 years old.

Yes a trade-in for your new car at the dealership is most convenient as you drive up with the old and away with the new. But you can leave a fair bit of money on the table that way. Nothing wrong with it as everything has its price.

We all know we buy any car, yes I used them as a guide price, but that is at the low end. And the stories I hear put me off wasting my time going to them as allegedly they price it down when you are there.

I've sold two cars in the end through SellCar.co.uk. Both were high end Mercedes and they are up for negotiation in the right direction. I didn't like their first offer but on both occasions I've managed to increase the offer. I do get a feeling they are more interested in 'special' cars, mine were both AMG models (not just the trim level diesels).

The last car I sold was my wife's Audi A3 Black Edition with B&O sound. Quite a unique car in that spec which again the likes of wbac don't recognise, I also put it up on Autotrader and was being pestered and low balled. But then I discovered wizzle.co.uk and put it up there honestly and started getting loads of offers from dealers. In the end the highest offer was from an actual Audi dealer. They send someone to inspect, got the price agreed, and on the day of pick up and instant transfer. No hassle, no need to leave my home. It was lovely.

There may be other services like this. I hope it helped for some thinking of selling.

Motorway are similar to whizzle, you submit the details of your car along with photos and it goes into a 24 hour auction where dealers bid and you have the choice to accept the highest bid or not.
I sold mine to WBAC in the end because got the run around from motorway and lost a couple days, I was working to a tight timeline to pick up my new car. After submitting my car was told it had to go to a different evaluation team who never got back to me and when I chased them the estimated price had gone down £1000.
Can't fault WBAC but then my car only had 9k miles on it due to covid so was mint and they didn't knock any money off, literally took 10 minutes and I was done.
