How come Superbit DVD's have a seamless layer change (on my Sony DVD player)? Why don't all DVD's do that?

I think the VOB files on this DVD's are carefully constructed so that VOB file change coincides with the layer change. AS the player would generally pre-fetch the next VOB file before the previous has completely finished, the layer change appears seamless.

the layer change on star wars II atoc

both times ive watched the dvd ive stopped the film half way through for one reason or another, so this may not be correct,

but is the layer change by the asteroid fields one of the longest pauses there is? on most/all my films you dont even notice the transition, but on aotc its a big PAUSE

Superbit titles have seamless layer breaks because they don't comply with official DVD specifications, which call for non-seamless layer changes (a forced buffer memory dump at the layer change).

Other discs comply with this requirement, and therefore have visible layer changes.

and why is that required? layer changes annoy everyone but the denon owners. tbh learning this has made the inflated superbit prices seem much more reasonable.

Why don't they change the official DVD spec? Is there anyone we can write to who would have any influence?
