SD DVD for Onkyo 875

Hi all

I am fortunate enough to be getting a 40" Samsung M86 (1080p native) soon and am VERY tempted with the Onkyo 875, mostly for the 1080p upscaling (I also have Sky+).

Basically, my question is this: I would like to get a new SD DVD player with HDMI (to pass the time untill the HD race has a winner), but do not see any point in a player that converts the original PAL stream (576i) when the Onkyo will do the job LOTS better (I hope). Sooooo, which is the player for me?

Lots of people rave about the Oppo's, but I am somewhat concerned with the PAL 2:2 pulldown issue on the 970 / 980, and the 981 doesn't output at 576i.

Would a player that outputs at 576p (Oppo 981, Denon 1730 etc) be a valid compromise?

I am somewhat confused...

I *may* have just found the answer, so for anyone else with the same question...

I emailed Oppo earlier today and here is their response:

At 576i the lack of 2:2 Cadence is not an issue, as the DVD player is merely decoding the raw video and transporting it without any de-interlacing, scaling, or other video manipulation. Your Onkyo TX-SR875 will be doing the de-interlacing and scaling, and will require 2:2 Cadence support in order to properly de-interlace the PAL signal.

I assume that, as long as the Onkyo can handle the 2:2 (any ideas on this anyone?), the Oppo 970 / 980 is an ideal partner.

Woo!
