Screen Excellence Mediatime ££££ - Worth it?

I'm looking to upgrade to a larger screen and because I'm going bigger I need to go for Acoustically Transparent as there will be no room for my speakers to go either side. I've hunted high and low and it seems there are very few audiophile quality electric screens available in the UK except for those offered by Screen Excellence...

BUT, WOW they are super expensive, at nearly £9k for a 155" 2.35:1. What makes them so expensive? Oh, and to add insult to injury, it's another £200 for a remote control. Admittedly the dealer I'm speaking to has offered me a discount, but it's still going to work out at around £8k.

I appreciate that this is a very specialist item, particularly at this size, but surely there must some good alternatives out there for a few grand less? I see that Display Technologies in Yorkshire have a great AT product, but they don't appear to offer electrically retractable screens, only fixed frame. Unfortunately because of my room layout it has to be an electrically retractable screen.

Whilst I have the money, I'm really struggling to justify the expenditure and I keep thinking what else I could be spending my ill-gotten gains on, but that big screen upgrade is such a temptation.

Does anyone have any experience of Screen Excellence, or are there any reputable and cheaper alternatives I've not yet come across?

Dreamscreen v7 are soon to produce an electric screen. Drop them a message, the material is incredible.

@mb3195 Thanks for the heads-up regarding dreamscreen. I emailed them a couple of days ago, but they've not got back to me yet :-(

As it happens I emailed DT in Yorkshire, just in case and got a reply which said they are going to be introducing electric screens soon, so watch this space!

A bit more choice at the higher-end of the market can only be a good thing and will hopefully result in a better deal for us consumers.

Follwoing,
I'm looking to get a 120" electric Tab Tenstioned AT screen and it seems the only real option is Grandview - which I saw and seems fine but they have no stock...

Persoally especialy since Brexit, I'd be warry of ordering a screen outside of the UK, in case it gets broken (and it has moving parts etc) I wouldn't like to ship it abroad (and pay taxes on the return etc)...

Still not heard back from Dreamscreen which is disappointing but @TB303 I take your point about ordering from Europe. That’s why I’m keen to follow up on the DT option, particularly if they prove to be more competitive than Screen Excellence. BTW the RRP for a screen excellence Mediatime 120” is about £6k.

That’s surprising, the comms when I dealt with them was excellent

Hi,
Im also looking into a Acoustic transparent screen to come down infront of my speakers.
I was thinking about a 150" cinemascope screen so that I get equal to 120in when watching 16:9 content.

First plan was to order a fixed Dreamscreen frame with V6 material which is alomst acustically invicible with only 1.5db loss.

The V7 states 3.5 db loss.. 3.5 starts getting about much for me. V6 would be fine.

I also contacted Screen Exellence about their MediaTime screen - with Enlightor Neo which they claim is the best AT screen on the marked at the time with >1 db loss over the whole freq. range.

Does anybody know more about this?

Screen Exellence with motor seems very tempting. As I want to have a small flat screen behind the big screen on the front-wall for normal/stereo music listening. I want to see the speakers's and have nothing infront of them when listening to stereo only. Also I dont want to be burning projector bulb only for spotify usage. Sound is most important for me. Especially stereo sound. But also want the big screen for movies.

The plan if I went for a fixed frame from Dreamscreen with V6 was to make a "flip it up" function-mechanism, so that I just manually flip it up horizontal with the ceiling and make some sort of easy lock mechanism with wood or whatever to keep it up there. But then you have the spot lights, and the "on-ceiling atmos speakers etc...

The 150 in Screen Exellence with Enlightor Neo would cost me 11000pound delivered to norway which is hurts just to think about :p

What eq system are you using? 3.5db is nothing in real terms. If I take measurements without my screen pre-eq and then with the screen post-eq, the difference is negligible.

Hi mb3195,

The house is under construction. I will be buying the Lyngdorf MP60 after the summer sometime so I have it before we move into the new house.

The MP60 can only have 1 measurement :/ or else I would have made 2 presets, 1 with and 1 without screen infront of speakers.

MP60 uses Room Perfect.

Ok, I was thinking in terms of loudness, that 3.5 db might mess with the surround setup, and atmos compared to front.

I will be running the Room Perfect before I have the screen infront of speakers, due to stereo sound beeing the most important. And when I listen to stereo the screen will be up and a wallmounted small TV behind will be used for Spotify/Tidal or whatever Im gonna use.

It will only drop off 3.5db at the higher frequencies, I honestly don’t think you’ll hear the difference.

I thought you could have more than one preset on the mp60?
Either way, I honestly wouldn’t worry yourself with it.

Hi,

I did aswell. But apparently it is only 1 as i got my local lyngdorf dealer to check with lyngdorf.

Ok.
So I might be able to use the "to come" V7 motorized drop down then instead of fixed V6...

You can save and load different configurations into the lyngdorf using a sd card or usb memory stick

ah ok. thats abit more work than you want for dropping the projector screen down or having it up. There must be enough memory on these processors to have 2 settings.. maybe it will come later..

Even my NAD M15HD had it with dirac, i had 2 different measurements

you plug the memory stick/sd card into the back of the lyngdorf and can leave it plugged in-load and save configs easily...its not difficult

Ah ok. Weird they did not mention that. Thanks for info :)
How long does it take to change / load to another config ?

Fyi..

the dreamscreen electric was not good enough to be sold see their response to me a few days ago…

Hi

Unfortunately the test screens did not come out as expected so we need to adjust some parameters and run new tests, pending first the new production of v7 material. We are sorry about this delay.

I’ve been in communication with DT screens about their new range and they are still finalising details. Estimated cost for what I’m after maybe fairly similar to screen excellence’s pricing. So I may end up going with them as the lead time will be shorter. Although I’m still struggling to justify the outlay and keep putting off pressing the button on it hoping that something else might come along that’s not so expensive.

I’ve just pressed the button on the Screen Excellence Media Time 155” 2.35, having got a good deal from Keith at Touchstone AV. Now I just have to strengthen the wall to mount it, seen as it’s about 70kg!! Exciting times ahead.

Very interessting. Let us know how it works out... 70kg... :p Wall or Ceiling mounted?

Im still on the borderline of what to do. Either a cheap TV wallmounted for TIDAL/spotify/music only... then a projector screen that comes down infront of everything for watching movie's and TV shows. Or just a big TV which is max 200cm wide. But the top line TVs dont come in those sizes yet... (exepct for 1 sony TV and the samsung microLED which costs about a Ferrari)

Still got 9-10months to decide though

My sapphire screen was mounted on special brackets higher up on a solid wall, this new screen will be mounted on a fake beam, which is actually an RSJ boxed in with plasterboard, so I’ve got to pull off the plasterboard and then put in some large wooden blocks, bolted to the RSJ and then replace the plasterboard and re-plaster It. Whilst you can get heavy duty plasterboard fixings, they are no good if your plasterboard isn’t securely attached, like in my situation.
