Appologies for posting yet another 'why have I got big black bars on the screen' thread, but can someone confirm that the R2 release of Scream is supposed to be this bad.

It's 2.35:1, and I've seen plenty of these before, but the image is extremely narrow, unlike any I've seen before.

I watched Hunt for Red October last night, which is also 2.35, but the image is much taller compared to Scream. I know that it is non-anamorphic, but why should that make it narrower ?

Perhaps your display is set to the wrong mode as your dvd player is probably set to 16/9 anamorphic mode which would make it extremely narrow and everyone would look distorted, try setting ur dvd player to 4/3 letterbox mode when watching Scream.

Of course ! I didn't think of that

Changing the settings of the DVD player had no effect, but changing the PJ to 'Zoom' mode sorts it right out.

    Thanks.

Only prob now is that it's 11:30 and I'm too knackard to watch the film !

As far as I know all editions of 'Scream' except the Japanese one are NOT

16x9, Anamorphic, Enhanced for Widescreen TVs. (etc).

To watch this item correctly, your TV needs to be set to <whatever your TV manufacturer calls 'zoom/letterbox' mode whereby a naturally 4x3 signal is enlarged in both vertical and horizontal directions, to fill the width of the screen and cropping off the top and bottom of thie signal>

Note: 'Signal' is NOT the same thing as 'shape of the film'.

The R4 DTS version of Scream is anamorphic but sadly its only the R rated version and not the Unrated directors cut thats on the Japanese and Danish dvds.
