I have just purchased myself a new harman kardon dvd player and i have got a feeling it is scratching some of my discs. Has anyone else experienced this or know of anything i could do?

Are you sure it is scratching the discs
and you are not hearing the disc spinning!

It is possible if the lens carrier is out of alignment.

Write a brand new cd & play this to check, that way you won't be damaging anything of any value.

I think CDs are thinner than DVD's, so the above test might not confirm if it is actually scratching your DVDs

dfield2000 you may be right. For reference I measured some discs with a Vernier.

DVD-R = 1.25mm thick
DVD = 1.25-1.26mm thick

CD = 1.16mm thick
CDR = 1.15-1.16mm thick

I just put in a dvd film i got free with a magazine and watched the first 15 minutes. When i removed the film it is definitely scratched. It's strange because the scratch is perfectly round and very feint (it isn't affecting the playback) but i'm not really sure what to do next? I can't really figure out what could be scratching a disc inside the player.

Return the player. No question.

I had a PS2 that did exactly the same. Eventually it will knacker the dics.
