Anyone remember the Rag and Bone Man from the 1960’s and earlier? Only us old timers such as myself will remember this! 😉😉😉

They're still around, but now drive beaten up white transit vans and pay no tax.

We had them in the 90's where I was.

That is so funny you say that. Just today I was putting out an old trampoline frame for the scrap man and a beaten up white transit pulled up and took it.

I remember the horse and cart around the streets of Brixton late 80s/early 90s, replaced by an open backed van around mid 90s.

I remember them from the 80s too, along with the pop man and the video man with thousands of videos in his van betamax and vhs

I remember them in the 50s and 60s ..... .. if you gave them something they used to give out those blocks of white stuff that women used to whiten the front door step

women round our way were very proud of their white door steps

There was one around the Garston and Aigburth areas (possibly more - I don't know) of Liverpool until the mid 90s. He'd take any scrap metal you had, but seemed to specialise in electronic appliances like fridges and washing machines because he'd take them and repair them to sell on if possible. Failing that he'd strip any parts he could, and scrap whatever else was left over. We found this out when my parents were planning to get a new washing machine, and asked him to take the old one away. He had a look at it before he took it, and told my parents he could fix it for a few quid as he had the components to fix it. He could have easily taken it and sold it for a nice profit, but he was decent.

Scunthorpe had one until the virus kicked in and he was still using the cart and horses, and doing that kind of yodel thing they did. When I stripped the house out last year and replaced everything I could have done with getting in touch with him because the Currys made a tidy amount taking away the old white goods, but he'd have taken them away for free.

I remember the worst two winters of the 60's.
Mike and Bernie!

Still have one where I live taking any fly tipped potential scrap metal away. Battered white pickup and not a horse in sight :p

Do miss the pop man though from when I was a kid in the eighties, my Sister & me used to live off Dandelion & Burdock in 1 litre glass bottles :D

What about the clinking bottles as the milkman in his electric cart delivered milk?
I suspect the snowflakes of today would find this annoying.

Yes, I think they were still around in the early 80s.

The ones near where I grew up (a small town outside Liverpool) used to collect mainly old clothes, and have back plates and saucers, and balloons in return.

As kids, we often used to raid the clothes cupboards when we saw them coming and got some balloons.

But mum wasn't too happy when she could not find her clothes...

I remember them coming round ringing a hand bell and yelling AAAAANYOLEIIIIIIIROOON!
I would run out with a bucket and spade to collect the horse poo for Dad's roses, as there might be a penny or two to be had as a reward.

Still get them round here - usually in a Transit pick up - but still ring the bell and call out and everything.

Remember rag and bone men. But I’m only human :D
Also the knife sharpener bloke
Milk Floats
and the Corona pop man :)

We also had the Corona pop lorry ...... mmmmm D&B !

There was also beer ... I don't remember it myself but remember the adverts for Davenport's Beer At Home .......

Milk man, Ice Cream van, Sally Army, Football Polls Man .... the streets were alive with traders and preachers !

Football pools, those were the days :) My Grandad had a man for that when we used to go visit. He also doubled up as the spot the ball man.

Scrapy that lives on our road has a swimming pool, tennis court and a ferrari. Paying no tax must be the way forward because I have none of those things.

My dog would go bat shit crazy when the pool man knocked on the door

He always stank of cigars, guess she didn't like the smell of them
