I have a sony freeview tuner with scart connector and a hitachi 17LD4000 LCD TV with component connectors, audio L+R and S-video inputs, I am using the supplied scart to composite lead but wondered if I could improve the picture, any advice would be appreciated

Your Freeview Tuner is most likely to offer you Composite or RGB video (+ stereo audio) from its SCART Output (you have to go into the set-up menu of the Freeview box to select RGB Out).

The RGB Output produces a much sharper and more detailed image than Composite Out.

If your TV only has S-Video and Component (YUV) Video Inputs (no SCART?) then you require an active Converter box to convert the RGB source signal into S-Video (good) or YUV (better).

JS Technology produce a range of suitable converter box's and you'll find plenty of positive feedback on AVForums from folk who have installed the JS Technology kit.

    Hello Petrolhead

A cable with a SCART on one end and 3 RCA on the other relies on the Source to Output YUV Component not RGB - some DVD players and the odd Freeview have the option of YUV on SCART.

If your Source Outputs RGB on SCART you will require a converter to convert RGB to YUV if you want to connect the Source to a 'Component' Input.

    Best regards

    Joe
