Scart or Component

All,

I've been lurking here for a while but this is my first post.

I recently bought a Panny Viera 42" which I absolutely love. Today, I picked up a Panny DMR-E55 DVD recorder to go with it.

My question is, will I notice a big difference if I connect the recorder to the TV via Component instead of the stupidly expensive scart (£70-odd quid) I currently have. I will be using the recorder as my player as well, until funds allow to purchase something special (funds very low after TV and recorder!). If there is a BIG difference, can anyone recommend a cable?

Advice gratefully received,

-nej

I've got the same plasma and dvd as you.
There is a slight improvement on Comp over RGB but only just.I'd happily watch either.
I use a JVC gold plated Comp lead from C***t @£20. Seems good to me.
ps Picture better still on Comp with progressive scan "off".Tiny bit grainy when "on"

Thanks for the reply - interesting what you say about the picture quality being worse with prog scan on. Why is this? I thought prog scan was always a good thing!

i'm no expert, but from what i've been told on these forums all plasma screens are inherently progressive devices (apart from alis screens), therefore the deinterlacing of your 2.5-3k plasma is likely to be better than that of your 200 squid odd dvd recorder-i think!

Thank you all for your help - I understand a bit more now.

Of course, this all went out the window when I discovered that the E55 only has an optical out and my cheap, crap, goodmans amp only has a digital co-ax input (plus normal stereo connections of course).... so no means of connecting it!

Fortunately, wife wasn't keen to lose surround sound so she accompanied me to C---t last night and we picked up a nice new pioneer all-in-one DVD/Amp/Speakers package to go with it.

So - an expensive day but I've learned something and have lots of lovely new kit to play with!

well at least you got some new kit...better not tell the wife you could have bought an optical to coax digi converter for about a tenner :)

I've just ordered a PWD7 with a component board - sorry if I'm being a bit thick here but should I really turn off the progressive output from the component terminals on my E55 for optimum PQ?

I have the pw7 and E55 and would say pq is slightly better with prog scan turned off on the e55 (even though the e55 came with a sheet insert recommending you use ps if you connect to a plasma)

Just got my PW6 last night. Girlfriend reckons the pic is better with PS on; I personally couldn't tell the difference between the two.

I too have just gone from RGB Scart to Component - slight improvement in PQ on my PW7. Biggest difference is that I can now use the Colour/Hue settings meaning faces no longer all have the same 'too much foundation' look to them.
As for using the deinterlacer on the DVD or plasma I find the plasma better and leave PS OFF on the DVD.
