We had a delivery this morning of our dem Linn Classik DVD. We pulled it out stuck it on our dem Panny plasma, then set about reading the manual…..

    First off, this looks lovely.

Secondly with DVD’s in DD it sounds lovely and DTS.

Now a bit more detail. Remember how everyone complained about the Arcam DVD remotes…well I think Linn have sourced theirs from the same guys. Except they asked for about 100 more buttons….all of which should be dual purpose….it’s a nightmare!

Is it region free? Well it has a country selection with USA, GB, Japan, Hong Kong…amongst others. We put it to USA and stuck in some US DVD’s. They worked….So we stuck it to Hong Kong and put in an RCE disc (Charlies Angels)…it played….so we stuck in MI2 (REGION2) and…it played….Region free RCE then I’d say!

It was set up with a cheapy Energy speaker package. We only played some DVD’s in DD and DTS through it. No stereo CD’s yet. I was surprised how decent it was. The composite video output was nice looking. Didn’t really try s-video yet. It can’t output component or RGB (BOO!) Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be able to do surround processing on analogue inputs and it hasn’t got any digital inputs..so no pro-logic even, let alone DD from Sky…. (big error I feel).Yes, that’s right only surround sound from internal DVD drive.

Hope to spend a bit more with it on another day, too busy just now.

    Good isn't it?:D

Linn demo'd it in Carlisle in November and it shocked several people. There are going to some very worried suppliers of kit out there if you get this much for £2k. Mind you the music Linn classic is another star that many overlook thinking that a stack of boxes will be better. I wish people would listen more.;)

I think Linn are going to make loads of new friends. Arcam should start loosing some sleep with this baby. Great performance IMHO.

Made me wonder, too. And I understand this is a one-box DVD-Amp solution, or what does Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be able to do surround processing on analogue inputs and it hasn’t got any digital inputs..so no pro-logic even, let alone DD from Sky…. (big error I feel).Yes, that’s right only surround sound from internal DVD drive. else mean?

Nothing to worry about then me thinks.

    You haven't seen it then:D

Yes there are omissions but it is a stunning performance from the little I saw. Many people in the audience weren't bothered the 'lack of inputs' and processing. They just wanted DD / DTS and DVD with 5 channels of amps in one box. The radio was just a nice bonus. I think it will hit a good niche market.

If you only want to play DVD in surround from an all in one box then it's great.

I do think it's a major error having no surround on the analogue inputs or even a digital input. I also can't believe there's no RGB or component output. Perhaps they'll fix that in the MK2 version..........

I have to say that I'm a bit worried. There hasn't been much information about the player so far. What kind of video-DAC:s does it use? Video outputs? Progressive scan?. It will cost over 3.000 euro so I expect not just "good" but "great" video performance. But from what I have read so far, the Pioneer 747 will probably kick Linn-butt when it comes to picture quality.

It will be hard to sell based only on the "Linn is better" mantra. Don't get me wrong, I have Linn speakers (Ninkas, love'em!), but I have high demands when it comes to PQ. No progressice scan? Sorry, but Linn would never make a misstake this big with the audio performance...

It would seem a lot of people are putting the Linn Classik Cinema down because 'it is a £2k DVD with only s-video output'. You have to remmember it is actually an all-in-one DVD solution not just a player. It does have a 5 channel amp built in and a tuner etc. It should really be compared to the other all-in-one boxes on the market, not other £2k DVD players (because that is what it is not).

As for the lacking of processing of external audio sources, seems a bit of a slip up. I'd expect a revision later in the year with extra procesing onboard.

Of course the comparision to single units at the same price are unfair, but for EUR3000 I expect better. Especially from makes like Linn.

But then others have also tried to cash in on the AV business and failed (MF for example) ... repeat in history?

frankly, I think that Linn cannot be considered as a specialist for home-cinema : they don't have the feeling for what is an upgrade : look at their 5103 AV processor. It costs a huge amount of money, and, already two years ago, was full in term of memory : absolutely not upgradable.

they want to be in every segment of the hi-fi and video market, and want to keep the image and reputation of one of the best brand. They also count on the fact that, only with their reputation, people will put 2.000 £ to have a dvd player, that is even not able to have the basic functions of a Pioneer model.

I think that they have now, what we call in France 'la grosse tête', that means the big head : their new Klimax amplifier are ridiculously expensive, their last loudspeaker has a stratospheric and also ridiculous price (for a dissapointing result).

Their marketing politic is difficult to understand : I now think (and I've been the owner of some Linn models), that for a cheaper price, you can have tremendously better quality and musicality....
