Great review, I sat down the other night just to check out the quality and ended up watching the whole film and I want to watch it again...
The atmos track on the beach is superb.

Now we just need its cousin, The Thin Red Line released on UHD and I'll be happy!

Heard good things about the 4K version (suppose to be best in quality from old releases at the moment) that we are seeing.
Trying to buy this at the right place, a must for 4K fans.
Remember sitting in the cinema 20 years ago and being blown away.
One of Spielbergs best works. Attention to detail was unparalleled..

I can see JAWS wont be long behind this... and will ultimately push me to get on the 4K Band wagon!

Ha! My equivalent of Jaws is Blade Runner. Once that was announced in 4K I literally had no choice whatsoever!

Band of Brothers and The Pacific would be nice in 4K.
Would need to get the credit card out LOL!

This is not a film i can watch on a regular basis,in fact i watched it when i brought the Blu-ray,dvd before then and on vhs.But it's not the kind of film that is meant to be seen all the time. For me this is a stunning piece of film-making and one that only Steven Spielberg could have made,i wont deny that it makes me have a lump in my throat as it's been mentioned the first 30 mins is just mind blowing and probably doesn't even begin to tell how it really was(If that makes sense).I brought the uhd Blu-ray on Monday and watched it on the same day its' a stunning transfer well worth a purchase.I Think this should be shown in schools as part of history lessons!

Can't imagine how brutal the Dolby Atmos soundtrack must sound like on a decent system. the DD 5.1 mix on the DVD is incredible on my modest set up. The first 20 minutes of this film is truly harrowing, but on the whole I think the film is pretty average plot and character wise. It has some great set pieces but I much prefer Terence Malick's The Thin Red Line which was released in the same year.

Agreed on the The Thin Red Line, the casting on that was amazing. Don't think the media at the time did the movie any justice. It is one of those films that goes underneath the radar when a big blockbuster is released.

Great piece of writing Simon. Having owned this movie for years, your first two paragraphs sum up the emotion and respect the movie deserves...

Double agree, The Thin Red Line shows Saving Private Ryan up for being overly melodramatic IMHO. Ryan's a good film and the battle scenes are very powerful but it's riddled with cliché in the characters and some of the situations. It's just so well made that it mostly carries it off.

Totally, the thin Red Line was more more realistic.

I was thinking the same, but with Criterion doing a remaster of the blu ray New World from a 4K master, which does look nice,i was thinking maybe Thin Red Line might go that way ? :)

I’ve the shoddier first Blu release of The New World and ashamed to say as Malick & Lubezki fan, I’ve still to watch it :0 hopefully both will get the release.

I do love Ryan though, something about Hanks, he’s just so dam good at most roles. Kaminski (DoP) has a great eye too!
This has also wanted to make me watch (as mentioned earlier) Band of Brothers, The Pacific didn’t live up to BoB for me but will revisit again.

      Great Review, as usual.
I bought this on iTunes some time ago, so got the automatic 4K upgrade recently & watched it again. As another poster wrote earlier, not one that I can watch frequently as it really can spin my mood. When ATV gets the Atmos upgrade, I will definitely watch again, but choose my moment carefully.
And yes, Thin Red Line 4K would be great!

Get ready for a good sleep! :D

Don't worry - there's bits of war and the odd line of dialogue by a Hollywood star to keep you going. I really cant understand the love for The Thin Red Line one bit. Im sure Malick would do away with the actors completely if he could - as it is they are barely in the film.

I’m currently so happy with quality (and availability, often 2nd hand) of Blu Ray 1080p I’m not going to upgrade for a while.
In the past I’ve always judged the release of Star Wars on a format (the original) to judge it had reached main stream acceptance?

Going a bit off topic here but I can understand that. However, just look at the big titles hitting 4K disc already and there are plenty in the pipeline according to rumours elsewhere.

Anyway better get back on thread!

Wow!! what a rush this was.
Loved the uptick in picture but perhaps not as much as the uptick in audio (for me).
The atmos is outstanding. Of course there's rumbles and bumps and bullets flying everywhere but one of my favourite atmos scenes was when the squad billeted in the church and Medic was talking about staying awake for his Mother etc. The impressions of height, emptiness and space as the voices echoed around the Church was really excellent and just goes to show the attention to detail the soundtrack got during the new mix.
      Simply wonderful stuff.

And the rain scene with the sniper watching over the family with the father wanting to send his daughter to the troops, sounded great.
