Satellite Speaker Placement

I'm investing in my first speaker/amp setup, and am looking to buy a TV stand or an entertainment centre similar to the one shown below.

I'm currently considering purchasing either the Canton Movie 80 CX, TANNOY SFX5.1 or Jamo A102 HCS5 which would then be paired with the appropriate sounding amp.

My question revolves around whether it's recommended to place the two satellite speakers on either side of the shelf (R&L). Would placing speakers on a wooden surface, diminish the quality of sound?

Ideally speakers should not be placed on shelves since it can cause issues with sound quality. That said since you are looking at small satelite speakers you will probably be OK with putting them within the unit. Just make sure they as far forward on the shelf as possible.

By "OK" does that mean, i'm not going to get the best possible sound from my speakers if i place them on a shelf?

If that's the case will probably have to opt for speaker stands such as these:

The speaker stands will give you the best sound so if you can I would do that and not put them in the cabinet.
