I've seen a package on Satalogue, a Samsung DSR 9500 + 80 cm Dish + Universal LNB + Choice of CAM for £399. Then a smart card separate for about £200 for TPS.

Is this my best/cheapest option to pick up a range of French channels bearing in mind I only have a Pace DTVA at the moment.

I'm watching French TV now. I bought an analogue kit from Auchan several years ago (50€), and pointed the dish at 5°W - easy! This summer I bought an Aston Fransat digital HD receiver which runs off the same satellite. Swapped out the boxes, and it works fine. I chose Fransat because it comes with a card valid for life (so they say!) and I didn't neet to realign the dish. TNT sat gives you the same off the Astra satellites, but the card is only valid for 3 years.
English suppliers of French stuff can be very expensive.
