XGPS can be downloaded from cydia now, but there will be an update for it 20th February that will include voice guidance as well

It can also be used with the 1st gen iphones and iPod touch if you get an external GPS receiver.

It downloads map data through your connection if using an iphone or you can choose to download map areas if you have no connection.

Here's the link with more info :

xGPS will Turn your iPhone into a True GPS device with Turn-By-Turn Voice Navigation - iPhone Hacks

Are you sure only 30mb, it implies in the vid that it is over a 1gb file for one county in Florida!!!!!! Also mentions the following:
If that is true the downloads even over wifi will be ridiculous!!!!!

They can fit the whole of the UK and Europe onto an SD card for the TomTom so i can't see its going to be 130 odd GB?

Even the GoogleEarth App isn't huge. We will only know once someone has downloaded it of course!

I agree but another post on the above link says London alone is 1.6gb so actually the whole of UK for 130gb does sound entirely possible

I've tried it without downloading any maps and it still works fine even in non 3G areas. Can't get the directions working though, perhaps this will be getting fixed in the update.

I like the fact this app also works in landscape mode :)

can you use a bluetooth GPS receiver with a 1st gen iPhone? I've got an old tomtom one from years ago so it would be great if you can.

I believe you can use external GPS devices with the 1st Gen but have never actually seen or heard of any working outside of the realms of tech demos.

Just downloaded xGPS and have selected to download the map of Perth which is 47Mb and its taking forever, god help you wanting to download the whole of the UK :rolleyes:

Yep, I haven't bothered to download any maps and it still works fine for me even in non 3G areas:thumbsup:

Only really need to download the maps if you have an ipod touch or you don't get free unlimited internet with your phone contract.
