    Hi All,

This is my first post here, so please be patient :):)

I have decided to take the plunge into the world of plasma, and was almost certain about buying the Hitachi 42PD3000, based on the reviews on this forum.

However, when I went to the local Currys to have a look at the Hitachi before ordering one(from JL of course :D ) I chanced upon the Samsung SP42P3SXB. This has now put a bit of a doubt in my mind, and having not really found anything about eh Samsung on this forum, I thought I'd ask!!

The way I see it, the case is as follows:

    Samsung
    FOR
    Integrated tuner(space saver)
    Picture in picture
Virtual Dolby Surround(wont ever use it)
    2100 page text memory(why!!!!)
    Fanless
    Slimmest

    AGAINST
    852x480 pixels
    Brand name not that reliable
    2 SCART sockets

    Hitachi
    FOR
    Rave reviews
    1024x1024 pixels
    3 SCART sockets

    AGAINST
    No picture in picture
    Non integrated tuner box

The picture quality on both seemed to be more or less the same to me, but its difficult to tell in a Currys showroom.......

The other dilemma might be that Currys offers 12 month interest free option on the plasmas, and JL offers 5 yr warranty. How good is the warranty? Are there any important exclusions? Do they come with a table top stand and speakers as standard, or are Currys offering them as a deal?

All help appreciated, and thanks for reading this story :):)

    Hello,

I've just setup my new Hitachi 42PD3000 which I got from JL in Southampton on Thursday.

    - Hitachi do "picture | Text" side by side which is good for Teletext etc, never really used picture in picture so couldn't say that it's a loss on the PD3000's.

    - integrated tuner? To be honest, i prefer the Hitachi approach as I have the tuner/cable box with my amp and DVD player and found it so much easier to plug everything in! I now have 2x3m SCART cables spare :) And what would all the cables look like if you have the screen on a wall?

    - JL warranty covers parts and labour. They send an engineer out, if it can't be fixed it's a like for like replacement. Curry's 5 year warranty will set you back nearly £1000! For me, this was well worth getting my CC out at JL :)

Good luck with your decision making, but my 2 weeks of investigations showed that the 42PD3000 from JL was the best decision for me :)

    Thanks for your reply, Nikbedwell.

Certainly has resolved a few issues in my mind.

Were the speakers and the table top stand included as standard with your Hitachi? I am planning on a wall mount for my screen.

Is the "fanless" thing of any significance?

Others, please feel free to post too :D

    Thanks
    Niraj

The Hitachi 42PD3000 does not have a fan in the screen or the AV box.

The main thing you missed is that the Hitachi has far, far, far, FAR superior picture quality to the Samsung, which is one of the worst plasmas on the market.

Also, do not buy from Currys as their customer service is borderline woeful and they'll do their absolute best to sell you *their* overpriced extended warranty.

I would seriously recommend you visit a decent AV specialist and see all the screens in action both with TV and DVD sources. I guarantee you that you'll never go near the Samsung (or indeed Currys) again.

Good sense being talked by cheesy, you might also prefer other plasmas when you've seen some. Be warned that plasmas are sensitive to setup and sources, you can't get a fair comparison in curry's that's certain, and most department stores are not really better, and are likely to try and sell you bose surround sound too. Now I've got to go and wash my hands for typing that word....

Thanks for the replies, Cheesy and MAW.

The only reason I went to Currys was cos it was there!!:D :D

You guys are a big help and I am finding myself leaning towards the Hitachi now!!

I guess I'll make a trip to my (not so)local JL, Seven Oaks and any other AV shop in Lpool and see what I can do, but looks like the Hitachi is gonna be it!!

Must make sure to quote the Cheadle store as the comparator for the price match!

    Thanks again,
    Niraj

JL Cheadle price matched to a local store.

    Hitachi 42PD3000 at £3,000.00

Dave Buckley at JL Cheadle was my contact who confirmed to JL Southampton for me :)

    Hope this helps,

    Nik

    Niraj,
No real need to travel to your "not so local" JL store. I ordered my Hitachi over the phone, using my credit card, got price match and free delivery.

Re questions about the Hitachi, it comes already attached to the table top stand, but it can be easily removed. Speakers are in a seperate box, but can be attached to screen in 2 mins, if required. Though mine are still in the box, as I am using my Pioneer amp and 7 KEF eggs for much improved sound.

    Curry's are £1,299 for a 5 yr warranty....which is slightly more expensive than £0.

If Currys are doing the Samsung for a similar price to the Hitachi at JL, profit margins suggest it is a cheaper set. I would take the Hitachi every time. Better quality, warranty and value...as my local Curry's wanted £4,844, ( Plasma £3,495, Warranty £1,299, Delivery £50) for the same deal as JL gave me for £3000.

Finally, you don't have to spend half an hour with the hard selling sales advisor...then his even harder selling supervisor... trying to convince them that you do not want, or need their expensive warranty. I ended up walking out of Curry's since the supervisor was trying to tell me that their warranty was better value than JL's free warranty, because it covered accidental damage. When I informed him that I had new for old coverage on my home contents policy, he basically told me I was a liar, because you cannot get that on Plasmas. One quick call to my insurance company confirmed that my Plasma was covered as standard on my policy.

    Thanks for that Jambo.

Maybe its just me and my obsessive compulsive nature, but I had to go and actually see the plasma at JL and have now ordered it. Of course, as discussed elsewhere, there are no stocks at the moment, so I will have to play the waiting game.

Also, for the record, I had never any intention of buying the screen from Currys. I had gone there to just have a look as it was closer to me that the JL :D :D :D

Now for the next problem of deciding where to put my B&W CC6 center speaker once the screen arrives, as at the moment it resides on top of my 32" CRT........

Thanks a lot to you all for taking the time to reply.

As a few people have mentioned stock delays I though you may be interested to hear that a couple of weeks ago I ordered a C42PD3000 from Internet TVsDirect.co.uk. They initially accepted the order, telling me that there would be a delay of a month or two. This was no problem as I was happy to wait for what I hope is going to be a cracking plasma. Last week they phoned to say that Hitachi are discontinuing the model, and then proceeded to offer me a substitute!

I have contacted Hitachi for confirmation, but I have yet to receive a reply. After a bit of time searching the web I did manage to order the plasma at LapTopShops.co.uk and am happy to report that the tv is on its way to me. Was ITD pulling a fast one? I'm not sure, but you may want to confirm that everything is okay with whoever is supplying your tv.
