Can't decide between these two sets;

SONY BRAVIA KDL40EX723

Samsung UE40D6530

Price between them is not a problem just want some opinions or facts of which is the better performer?

Hope some peeps can help me:lease:

They are very similar sets, neither are fantastic at 3D although the Sony does reproduce full HD 3D albeit with a fair bit of cross talk. I have a 6 series Samsung though and I find the 3D really good for movies, I haven't gamed in 3D yet though which is where the res drop is supposed to be most noticeable.

The Samsung is a much better 2D set though mainly due to the incredible blacks it produces. The Sony's blacks are a little purple (as per the review Vickster referenced) and I chose against the Sony for this reason as I considered both recently too before plumping for the Sammy.

I'd say if 2D is your main concern and 3D will just be for the novelty then get the Sammy. If you want to use the 3D a fair bit (especially for gaming) then get the Sony. If however you watch a lot of movies then go for a Panny Plasma, either the ST30 or the highly regarded GT30.

Not really bothered about 3D. Is this one any good then as its ST31; PANASONIC TX-P50ST31B ONLY £700 or is there any other plasma anyone can recommend. My uses are for gaming(xbox360 and PS3), movies and sky hd.

Thanks for the help so far!

Also found this one Panasonic Viera TX-P50ST30 for £700 with 5 year warranty?

Thanks vickster but i think 50" may be too big for my living room can anyone recommend a 42" or 46"? Anyone got any advice as to the PQ on the Panasonic VIERA TX-P42S30B only £399 or Panasonic Smart VIERA TX-P42ST30B for £449?

There is very limited availability of the ST30 at that price - Amazon sold out and RS have some ex displays, returns dotted around

There is a 46ST30, but fewer good deals as a popular set and not extra stocks around the place

Buy Panasonic Viera TX-P46ST30 Plasma 3D TV, 46", Freeview HD with 2x FREE Medium 3D Glasses online at JohnLewis.com £50 more, but worthwhile if you cannot fit the bigger model!

Review of the S30 - the ST30 is better in every way, 3D aside

So do you think I should go for the 42 for £449 if i can get one new? and do you think that its worth buying it from JL with a 5 year warranty for an extra £100 or do you think that its not required?

If that's what you want, yes, it is a good and popular set for your uses - one thing to bear in mind - there is no perfect TV at any price point :)

Buy from a renowned retailer with a good returns policy and preferably an extended warranty (it's £549 at JL if you struggle) - if RS, pay the extra £45 for 5 year cover, well worth it IMO

Samsung has a reflective glossy screen similar to plasma's and the Sony has a matt non reflective screen.

Maybe a deciding factor depending on your room layout.

Cheers

I'm also deciding between the Sony KDL40EX723 and a Samsung UN40D6400 but from all the things I have been hearing about the 6 series samsung I think I will most likely buy a sony. I have also heard samsungs have some problems with ghosting, motion blur plus they have that glossy screen that Im not sure I would like since my current is matte. Anybody have any suggestions for a good 40 in led 3d for me I will be primarily gaming on ps3 and 360 and also watching blurays.

Panasonic DT30 is a good TV also

Shiver2K8 have you looked at the SONY KDL40HX723?

SONY KDL40HX723, SONY 40 inch 3D LCD TV, SONY 3D LCD TV, 3D LCD TV, Television | Rgbdirect |

I am in a similar situation as you looking for a 40" TV and have considered the models you listed. I tested out the KDL40HX723 recently and it looked very good.

I have its now between the KDL40HX723 and the Pany TX-P50ST30 completely different sets but for overall PQ and performance which one would people recommend?

Why are you opting for 2 totally different sizes?

I am looking at either the KDL40HX723 or the Samsung UE40D6530. They are both within budget and fit my living room well. Just not sure which set to get.

The P50ST30 will be amazing if you can accomodate it. I have tested out the 42ST30 and was amazed by the quality. The KDL40HX723 also stood out because it had little or no clouding which the Samsung's are known to suffer from. The blacks looked great.

For under £650 you will be hard pushed to find a better 40" LED/LCD panel.

Well I have a 40" Sharp Aquos already and I think that we could go bigger due to the shape of our room..........

What's your budget? Going from a 40" to a 40" doesn't make that much sense so the 50ST30 would be better unless you look at the Sony/Samsung 46/55.

Around £800 because i will be buying the ONKYO HT-S5405B and Panasonic DMP-BDT310 at the same time.

Is this set worth the extra £300 without extended warranty and 3d glasses ? PANASONIC VIERA TXP50GT30 or this one for £835 with 3 year warranty; Panasonic TX-P50G30? Totally lost theres that many sets! HELP SOMEONE LMAO!

Hi,

I've considered all of these TV's, the ST30 to me is just to ugly a TV to feel happy buying and I would buy the GT30 (which looks much nicer) but can't justify the increased costs as nobody is bundling 3D glasses for it and I'm not able to afford another £300+ for 4+ sets of glasses.

The HX723 (sony) looks very good in 2D and 3D but again has no bundled glasses on any deal I can find online or in store. however it's price has come down to £629 which you can get price matched at JL.

The Samsung D6530 looks amazing (pic quality) in 2D HD in store displays but I've been put off by it's apparent lack of 3D handling abilities. However I haven't been able to demo this which I will try to do before rulling out as some on these posts state that 3D for movies looks fine - all in the eye of the beholder....

You can get the Sammy in Comet with 3 pairs of 3D glasses at no extra cost at the moment for either £649 or £699 all in which is very good, providing you get a set which doesn't have the 3D or clouding issues. But having spent many hours researching and reading these forums and being scarred off by the amount of complaints on LG, Sammy, Panny, Sony panel etc I have come to the conclusion that you can read the posts on these forums and never buy a set !!

I would also say that if your current tv is a sharp you can now get the top of the range sharp 3D tv (Le831e) for £699 including 2 pairs of glasses from sonic direct which JL will price match. It's had pretty good reviews from what I've seen to date.

Sharp LC46LE831E 46" 3D Full HD 1080p LED Quattron TV Freeview-HD | SonicDirect.co.uk

What I do agree with on these forums is the advice that you should check out as many in store as you can ( which I've been trying to do much to my wife's displeasure), at the end of the day don't take someone else's word as your sole reason for buying a TV and go with what you feel (by demo-ing??) will fit your critera the best.

For me the Sharp is a good choice for the bundled deal and I have seen it on demo in my local Curry's superstore and it looked good although it was only running an animated 2d blu ray film. You can get the 40" for £500 from Sainsburys as well with 2 glasses.

The sony hx723 I've also seen in JL and at a local TV specialist with demo rooms called Hinchleys (in Cardiff) and looks v.good in 2d and 3d from what I saw.

The LG 42lw550T or 650T looks excellent in 3D and if you are put off by comments that it's not full HD in 3D then I would suggest viewing it as I couldn't tell a difference, the 3D is stunning, the 2D not so much....which is what has pu tme off that model as 2D SD and HD will still make up the most of my families viewing.

The one other TV that I have seen and loved (but can't quite afford) is the Samsung D7000, this looks amazing in 2d and 3d and is coming down in price - £949 online and in some stores, but again if like me you are buying a new TV in part for the 3D then the lack of glasses and the extra cost of buying them means that as much as the D7000 looks stunning I can't justify buying one....yet

Good luck with deciding what to go for though :) I'm chickening out for a few weeks to keep an eye on prices and deals especially as all the 2012 ranges will be announced in mid/late Jan by most manufacturers which I hope will see deals for the 2011 ranges appear with bundled glasses or maybe a drop in the overall pricing....:lease:.....and instead will get a new home cinema system (AV receiver , blu ray and speaker package) and get that set up ready for getting a TV in a month or so...just don't tell my wife as she doesn't know yet !

Much of what you said mirrored my thoughts perfectly...the models that keep on coming up are the Sony KDL40HX723, Samsung UE40D6530 and the Panasonic TX-P42GT30/TX-P42ST30. Problem is I started out wanting a 37" as I just don't want a TV overtaking my living space but all of the models that seem to get recommended are 40" +. While I could persuade myself to consider a 40", I think a 42" would be a a bit too much for me...in any case, I too thought the ST30 was far too ugly to sit in my living space and the GT30 just too expensive albeit much nicer to look at...not sure why Panasonic didn't release GT30s/ST30's in 40" because a 40"GT30 at a decent price would have been a no brainer for me.

I must say that the Samsung UE40D6530 attracted my eye because it just looked so good on the stand..and after reading so many positive reviews, was pretty determined it would be the one (that or the 37" version) but when I went into a store and actually saw the footage, I was really dissapointed with what I saw...now I don't know what cross-talk or ghosting is but I thought the screen pixelated and and juddered a lot around rapid movement (something I'd never seen before on a TV coming from an old Sony Flat screen CRT). I then caught sight of the KDL40HX723 which didn't seem to suffer from the judder at all.

Something else, I started out quite put off 3D as I wasn't that impressed with what I saw (Some top end Sony TV and the Sony Store), but then in another store I saw it on another TV (Panasonic Plasma I think) and thought yeah it actually would be nice to have.

So I'd like to ask you guys, is judder, pixelation and motion blur just something I'm going to have to put up with in my next TV or is it more likely that the places I saw them demo'd just didn't have them set-up right?

O and what of the whole LCD is better than Plasma argument...and how much REALLY are you going to save on electricity bills with a 40 LCD over a 40 Plasma?

One more thing to throw into the mix..is SMART TV's...again..would be nice being able to do the internet thingy from your sofa on the TV..watching youtube..using skype and for some of us nerds even a bit of spreadsheet work

Burnside the 37" panels aren't always the same as the 40" models so be aware of that. Panasonic do a decent 37" LEDs (DT30).

I am also after a 40" and nothing bigger due to living room and looking at Sony KDL40HX723 (£629), Sony KDL40NX723 (£699) and Samsung UE40D6530 (£649). A 40 isn't that much bigger than a 37 so it's worth going for it if you can.

During testing the KDL40HX723 looked very good. The blacks and whites were very crisp and the detail very good. The Samsung looks good but suffers from clouding from what I have read on this forum. The KDL40NX723 looks amazing!

If your coming form an old flatscreen CRT any LCD or plasma will fill the room more.

However my current philips LCD which is only a 37" is the same size as some 40 or even 42" LED / Plasma TV's that I've been considering. And when I purchase my Philips 4 years ago the TV measured the same as my old 28£ sony CRT. A few years back 37" was seen as a good size for those upgrading from 28-32" CRT TV's due to the size of most UK homes makign it a natural fit.

Having spent 4 years with our 37" LCD It feels perfectly suitable. The reason (i think) that there aren't as may 37" TV's around now is that as UK consumers have got used to LCD/LED TV's we now see 40"+ as more of a standard size - IMO anyway.

As for judder etc, I'm no expert but my opinion is it's a bit increadible that CRT TV's were judder free etc but new modern TV's can't seem to do what TV tech had right 10+ years ago.

Not all TV's have judder etc and dependent on the individual you may not even notice certain items that other forum users post as major issues. For example having watched a 40D6530 today in store running a 3D movie (the Tv having had bad reviews for 3D) i thought it looked almost as good as the 3d being shown on the D7000. Eye of the beholder :)

However all that said I've put my money down now on a Panasonic 42GT30 bundle with BR player and glasses from John Lewis for £899.

Good luck making your decision
