Filing all but confirms the rumours
Samsung has pretty much confirmed everybody's suspicions that it is to release a smartwatch by filing a US Trademark for the 'Samsung Galaxy Gear'.
The trademark would be used for: “wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band, or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages,” Samsung said in a filing with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office dated July 29.
A little more meat on the bones is added later in the patent with the device(s) capable of “the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers,” according to the filing.
And if the rumour mill is grinding out the truth, we're likely to get our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Gear at a special event just prior to IFA 2013, in Berlin.
