    Hi,

    I've decided I want the Samsung SP50.

Has anyone bought one recently and can recommend an online vendor?

I can get hold of a Costco card, buy one at the Trafford Costco and have
them deliver it, but if there's a reliable online vendor that has them in
stock now and can deliver one to Manchester for about £2050 or less I
    might do that instead.

I've also read that the glass component shelf is definitely included at
Costco, are there any vendors where this isn't the case?

Most websites (e.g. PRC direct) do not mention the extra stand, and the
person on the phone there did not know either.

Pixmania seem a bit "too good to be true" at £1729 inc. VAT, they're
currently showing availability on the 10th of June, has anyone on these
forums actually received this set from them?

Final question - Has anyone connected an Xbox using the HD AV kit and
tested 720p or 1080i output modes (in games or using Xbox Media Center
to play divx/dvds)? How's the quality?

Well, if there are then forum members have been awful quiet about them (which is unlike normal behaviour)

    Cheers

if time is on your side, use the £70 off voucher code found at kelkoo, and bag the sp50 for £1680 delivered. They say they are expecting delivery this week, although some members with orders say they have orders in transit, but i am now (order place 10/5/05) still waiting. but with a £300 saving im definately waiting a week or maybe two. by this time the pv500 will be even cheaper and a great alternative.

The sammy 50 is a great set and impresses me every time i use it, cant wait for high def tv. :D

Where did you get it from.

Am I right in thinking you have to set it to NTSC to use it in HD mode?

How does it compare to DVI in terms of quality?

Got the HD pack from www.liksang.com, i think it was 18 quid. You use a video switcher to change to ntsc and that lets you switch on 480p, 720p and 1080i. It,ll always run the game in the highest def available on that game but even on 480p its sharper. Quality wise is great, media center running at 720p is awsome.
If you go to the console forum and do a search you should find a fairly sizeable thread that covers everything you need to know. :D

Thanks for the tip - went to John Lewis in the Trafford centre today after visiting Costco, they will indeed do price matching, so should be able to get the Samsung for just under 2k with JL's 5 year warranty.

I'm tempted to go with the Pioneer PDP-505XDE now though, which Costco has for 3999 (incl. PDK-TS05 table stand and PDP-S21 detachable speakers). It was priced nearly 5400 at JL, but I've seen it as low as 3500 online...

The pioneer looks good and is a great plasma, but go and look at a plasma that is set up on sky or aerial feed !! Plasma's are great when inputing a good solid high quality signal. But suffer badly with a lower signal input. I have had a plasma, but returned it for a DLP set ! plasma's also use a hell of a lot more power and suffer from screen burn !! DLP wont do this. My SP50 gives a stunning PQ on sky (and thats through a scart lead !!) Get a modded x-box and games are unbelivable !! :D My advise is think 1st DLP....BUT think 5 times about a plasma !!!!

Someone from John Lewis at the Trafford centre rang me back and said they will NOT match Costco - despite what two shop assistants in the store told me, and despite other John Lewis branches matching Costco according to other members' posts...

Any ideas how I can persuade them to match? Is Costco matching a policy across all John Lewis stores or is it up to individual stores?

The Trafford centre Costco is now out of stock of the SP50's as well, they are expecting new ones beginning of July :(

I bought my Tosh DVD recorder from prc direct and they were ok, delivered on time, although the guy i spoke to spent too much time trying to sell an extra warranty.

Wherever you decide to buy I would check out return/refund procedures first though.

AV Alan...just ordered yesterday (15/06/05) from PRC Direct and it will be delivered Saturday 18th - was waiting three months from "unbeatable" so this is great (and £200 notes cheaper too)

FYI:- The glass shelves are included and listed in the specs, although you would have thought they would empthasie this as it's important to many people!

Apparently no John Lewis anywhere in the country and no Costco in the North west currently has stock.
Neither does Robertsons Online, nor PRC Direct (no dates given). Waiting to hear from AVWOW.

Have you bought yet, AV Alan?
The Costco price is £1996 btw including a 3 year warranty.

As I said above, the Manchester Trafford Centre John Lewis would not match Costco in the end, but the Reading one said once they are back in stock (expected end of the month) they could arrange delivery to Manchester at the cheaper price.

Would unbeatable match pixmania's price? As they have their price promise which says that they if you find a better deal within 7 days of buying it they will match that price and beat it by 10%. So in theory you could get the SP50 from them for £1528!

Does anyone know if Unbeatable will match that price?

With the warranty's that come with these sets particularly the John Lewis one. Do they cover bulbs/lamps? and whilst slightly off the subject matter does anyone know if it does cover bulbs in general for all DLP sets or is this just related to the sammy?

    Thanks

Samsung warranty taken from their website
The Samsung warranty covers manufacturing defects only. Please note that this does not include consumable items such as batteries, bulbs, ink cartridges etc
So, no warranty from Samsung on the bulb, even in the first 12 months :(
