From hdtvorg.co.uk:

The Samsung LE32R87BDX like the rest of the R87 range is a real work of art. Glossy black finish, elegant bevelled undercarriage with hidden speakers and swivel stand will create an impressive centrepiece for any living space.

The R87 range from Samsung forms the companies new base range LCD TVs, but as such, connectivity and features will not be found wanting. Three HDMIs are accompanied by 2 Scarts, component video, pc input and an Integrated Digital TV tuner (IDTV) for Freeview.

Below you will find a collection of settings for your Samsung R8 LCD Television. Remember, These settings are just a guide, a starting point to adjust to your own liking. Many people prefer to have high contrast images with little to no shadow detail. The settings below have been created to try to capture natural colours and show the full range of detail while maintaining good black/white detail.

Updated Settings: Tuesday 1st January 2008:
- Updated: Xbox 360 via HDMI (Now using 720p/Just Scan combo)
- Added: Curly99's Freeview settings.
- Added: Xbox 360 Elite via HDMI settings.
- Updated: Virgin Media (not V+) via RGB SCART.
- Added: Nintendo Wii via Component.

Special Note for PC Users: When using a PC, you can use a DVI to HDMI convertor on HDMI Port 2 and have 1360x768 output. This means you can do 1:1 Pixel Mapping via a 100% digital signal, this is the best signal this TV can ever recieve and display, much better than using VGA.
---

Note for Sky/Virgin TV Users: If you want to veiw 4:3 channels unstretched, then I recommend you use the following picture size settings on the input.

Size: Auto Wide
Screen Mode: 4:3
---

Most of the settings below where calibrated using Calibration Images found here. You can view them via media sharing on your various devices over network or USB stick.

Sky Remote Code:

Service Menu Options:

Ok, the first stop is the Service menu. Now alot of people will tell you not to enter this menu as it will void your warranty, so this is your call. I personally have found that disabling Dynamic Dimming stopped a banding issue I was having, most noticeable in dark scenes. It also stopped the backlight changing levels too slowly when moving from dark scenes to bright scenes. Backup any settings you change, incase you need to restore them.. Be very careful many people press things without realising what they are doing and it is possible to ruin your TVs settings.

To enter the Service Menu, key in the following button combination in sequential order, not holding them down, tap one, then a very short pause, then the next, while the TV is in standby:

INFO + MENU + MUTE + POWER

Now adjust the following settings ONLY in the Adjust menu option:

Dynamic Dimming: Off (This stops the screen flickering when it changes from dark to light scenes quickly and vice versa)
Dynamic Contrast: On
Dynamic CE: Off

Press Power to Exit and save settings, leave it a second and power back on.

VGA Input - Xbox 360 - High Definition - 1:1 Pixel Map @1360x768:
==================================================

For Xbox 360, in the May 2007 Dash Update, they introduced a new setting called "Reference Levels", this is essentially a Gamma fix for the washed out VGA. It helps alot that Microsoft have introduced the fix at their end, helps us with calibration at this end.

Auto Adjusting Samsung R8 to Xbox 360 at 1360x768p via VGA.

Firstly you need the following calibration image:

1: Jpg_image

2: Rar_file

3: Zip_file

This image is exactly 1360x768 and contains the necessary curves and lines for your R8 Samsung to auto adjust to, to give a sharp, clear picture.

The easiest way to view the image on your TV is to put it on a USB Stick or Hard-drive or similar device and then plug that into the USB port on the front of your Xbox 360 and then view the image from the picture viewer, selecting the USB device and navigating to the correct location.

You can also share over a network, There is a brilliant guide here. When you have added your image to your library within WMP11 or Zune Software, browse to the image via the COMPUTER share on your Xbox 360.

Auto Adjusting.
Now with the image on screen, make sure any xbox 360 GUI features have faded out, this includes any info panels across the top or the control panel. On your TV remote, press MENU, then go down to the 4th option and choose PC. Here there will be an option to auto adjust. When you press Auto Adjust your screen will go black for a few seconds, do not press anything until it comes back on.

You should now have the sharpest possible image from 360 you can get with this TV. Enjoy.

These settings are now prefered over the 'Optimal Resolution' dashboard setting of 1360x768. The colour depth is greater, richer and theres more options available when using the 720p resolution. Plus with the 1360 resolution you can't play 50hz only xbox games, with 720p you can.

I found that Black adjust and HDMI black level made it too dark - there was no depth to the blacks. As for the PC, there is as far as I know, no image processing being applied to the video signal. The video card is a Nvidia 6200 shoving it all out over DVI.

wow thanks for that, I will use these to compare, Im awaiting my 40" R87, supposed to be the savo its coming, prob be late when I eventually get setup though.

For Xbxo 360 what shpuld I set it to in display settings? I have the component cable that came with it, 720P or 1080i ? I notice a lot of games are now 1080i can the 40" R87 support his?

cheers

Cool, my 37" comes on Saturday. Will be using it with PS3 via HDMI. Anyone got optimal settings for that?
Also, how are normal DVDs looking with this TV?

sorry that i am keep repeating myself all over the forum but has anyone connected their R8x (32 inch preferably) with a PC over dvi->hdmi? What do you think of the quality? Is it 1:1 pixel mapping?

edit: also what do you think of movie plus advantage or disadvantage?

I was originally looking at an M87, but there seem to be BD playback problems from the PS3 due to not natively supporting 24fps playback. As such thought about one of these as a temporary measure until the LED models come out later this year which will hopefully have fixed all of these problems.
It would primarily be used with a V+ box and a PS3 via HDMI.

Would the lack of 1080i cause any problems?
I'm sure I read about BD playback from PS3 not supporting 720p and as such downgrades itself when used in 720p mode. Anyone know if this is true or not?

Are you saying this TV doesn't support 1080i?

Well the resolution listed on Samsung's website is 1366*768 so I'm guessing that it doesn't output a 1080i picture. It may downscale a 1080i input and output at 720p, but I'm not sure on this and someone who owns one would need to confirm.

I would have thought it needed a 1920x1080 resolution to be able to do this, but I hope I'm wrong as if so this could be a good stand in model for me until the 1080p LED's come out later this year.

Does anyone else know about this who could confirm either way. What about an existing owner of an R87 or R88. Do they work @ 1080i ?

it takes a 1800 in input no problem, i have my sky hd connected by hdmi to my r88 and it displays the picture no problem. Most hidef displays will scale the 1080 to the 768 lines the tv has.

the manual states than the tv provides the optimum picture using 720p
the best resoloution setting is 1080i.

i leave my upscaling dvd and sky at 1080i and the picture is stunning

You gotta remember 720p/1080i on ALL TV's with 1366x768 are not 1:1 native. So even 720p is upscaled to fit the screen.

This TV can accept 720p and 1080i over Component, I don't have any HDMI sources to test at the moment unfortunatly, so I dunno about that. But I think HDMI only allows progressive, so it would be 720p only.

andyloc, very few games are rendered at 1080p, none are rendered at 1080i natively. 100% of all xbox 360 games are 720p. If you are using Component, I recommend 720p output from the 360. But I also recommend VGA because Microsoft are addressing all VGA issues with their spring update on May 7th and also the R8 series, PC THEATRE MODE, fixes the gamma issues with washed out images. I am using 360 via VGA On this TV and it looks fantastic, 100,000x better than R74, with sub brightness and contrast changes.

I know I posted this in the other thread, but I wanted to put it in its own proper post on this thread:

All these images are from Xbox 360 VIA VGA, yes VGA with no washout on the 37" R88 with AMO1, its hard taking pics with my Camera as its so old (Click the Image for full 1600x1200):

Anyone got their settings for Thomson Sky HD box (both SD and HD)?

And anyone tried this with a Sony DVPNS76H upscaling with Hdmi?

:lease:

Blackbolt360 - can you take a picture of your pixels? NOt sure if possible but 'once bitten twice shy' and all that.

Just that AUO do two screens - P-MVA and A-MVA. I am desperately trying to fing out if they are supplying both panels to the 37R88 and if so how can I tell the difference.

I have this panel on order and would like the superior A-MVA panel.

Any chance of a picture of the connections on the back please?

Anyone got any photo's running 1080i?

PS3 through HDMI would be great.

i will post mine up when i get home, i have my samsung 850 upscaling dvd player conected via hdmi and i couldnt believe how good the upscale picture looked, i prefer the 1080i over 720p when upscaling.

Here is a picture of the back of the tv but its not as clear because I have alot of stuff plugged in. Also you can see that I haven't even had time to give it a good wipe down since coming out of its box on sunday. Its got that nasty static sticky dust that doesn't like to move its ass.

You can see a diagram of the inputs in the pdf manual here.

to R8x owners: What do you think of the movie plus feature? is it worth having it on? does it really reduce motion judder?

How about dynamic dimming? does it interfere with PQ you think you might need to switch it off, like some R7x owners
did?

Thanks

Does this movie plus feature help when watching the footy?#

A good review for this panel. Notice is states that the 37 is better than the 32 for standard definition.

http://www.hdtvorg.co.uk/reviews/lcd/samsung_le37r87bdx.htm.

If the link doesn't work then go to HDTVorg home page and their is an article on it that links to the full review.

Still waiting for mine to come in stock - not fair!

Notice is states that the 37 is better than the 32 for standard definition.

yeah i was thinking of going for the 37 one, it's about 200 pounds more than the 32 I believe and maybe too big for one bedroom flat living room :D.
u think it's worth the extra £££?

A more fundamental question: are there any technical differences between the R86/87/88? As far as I can see from the Samsung wbesite, it's all just asthetics - white/orange; black with front centre on/off switch; black with side on/off switch, respectively. Is that right?

I've ordered a 23 inch R87 from cheapelectricals, who are expecting some in first couple of weeks of May. I don't think I can wait 'til then, so considering ordering an in-stock R88 from Dixons.

I think the only difference is the location of the power button and the colour. I have checked the manuals of all 3 and they appear identical.

R86 - White with Front Center Power Button
R87 - Black with Front Center Power Button
R88 - Black with Right side touch sensitive power button.
