Woah, a perfect 10! I did not see that coming!:laugh:

Need to read through the review fully, but based on the last week I've spent with the 75" it's a mighty impressive bit of kit. Jumanji was jaw dropping at times, the extra brightness makes a huge difference to those outdoor shots.

Great review @Steve Withers, many thanks......we have been waiting with bated breath as you know!

A 10 is a great score and I only have one question which I think I know the answer to already, however here goes -

I want to go from my 55B7 to a 65 Inch TV - is the Q9 the best option? My viewing habits are UHD Blu Ray and HDR gaming on my PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Again thanks for the fantastic review.....are you keeping the Q9?

So a TV where you have to sit pretty much dead centre in front of it to get the best picture because of the viewing angles gets a 10?

To be fair, Oleds are fantastic but have plenty of niggles to keep them at a 9, may change this year with better motion (at least on the LG’s) so may have a ref LCD & ref Oled.
Have been looking forward to this review since hearing about it on the podcast.
Good to see Samsung come back, competition will help us all in the end.

I agree that Oled have niggles to keep them at a 9 but you have to think the same about the Samsung as it has its share of niggles from reading the owners thread.

Review sounds great, very accurate out the box makes me think it's a cherry picked panel sent to av forums to review, and at £2999 for a 55 inch I think they are overpriced, it needs to be around half that for me to bite, will keep an eye on the price though as I'm looking to upgrade the panny vt65 in the bedroom

Great review @Steve Withers. I know you discussed game mode and VRR, but you forgot to mention the Game Motion Plus mode that allows interpolation upto 120hz. That’s a shame as I was really looking forward to a review addressing this option. Could you give a quick rundown what you think of this mode, does it cause much artifacting etc.

      Thanks.

For reference here's the rtings measurements of movie mode out of the box

I know there's panel variance but this is another reason I think the tv that mr withers received was cherry picked for it to be so good out of the box

Seems like Samsung have a hit on their hands
But their pricing, if it stays this way, means they won’t be selling many
If they really want to make an impact on the top end of TVs they need to price them far more competitively

My set was nothing like that out of the box. It wasn't as perfect as Steve's, but lightyears away from the hot mess you've just posted.

So it’s a 10 with a caveat then. It’s only a 10 in the world of LCD TVs. Other demos I’ve seen of this TV exhibited a few issues that would stop it from being a reference model.

Surely panel variance can't be that bad that results as bad as the one I posted from movie mode out the box from the rtings review, to the one Steve received being near perfect and not really needing a calibration at all, which again makes me think Samsung have had a fiddle with this one before sending it out, doesn't really matter in the long term as most people buying a high end tv get them calibrated, certainly looks a great tv, surprised Steve didn't mention any grey bars in the review like you've been experiencing

Which other TVs have received a 10 before?
Must have really blown Steve away if he dismissed the viewing angles, reduced shadow detail, lack of DV and still gave it 10.

Might have to go and have look at one now

No idea, all I can tell you is that my retail sample was not like that.

I am surprised that Steve hasn't seen to grey bars in shows like Lost In Space. At this point I don't know if it's because mine is a 75" (there was a full on conspiracy theory on the other forum because the 75" panels are not made by Samsung), if it's a fault with my set, or maybe I've ballsed something up in the settings. I don't think it's the latter, hopefully when some more owners come on board it'll be clearer.

The last 10 I remember seeing was the EG960 (I had four of them, obviously:D).

      • No screenshots of 5% or 100% uniformity
      • No screenshots of black uniformity
      • No screenshots of this 'impressive' upscalling. How should I interpretate impressive with no screenshots
What is your reference point of comparing. How do you come up with these words 'impressive'.

Does AVforums ever submit their test results?

I have a feeling Steve is going to give the C8 a 10 as well. The line about reference badge for each tech gives this away :p

      Have a look at this
OLED vs QLED 2018 | SDR comparison in the dark...
I know it’s a comparison to an OLED, and to me an OLED will always win due to the level of light precision it is capable of; but the Q9FN still suffers from blooming, colour washout and DSE.

I'm very happy to see the review, again not sure why @Steve Withers didn't get the blooming you have in lost in space @raymondo77.

Probably worth cross-checking firmware and Netflix version numbers at this stage.

I'm very excited for this tv. Roll on black Friday. :)

@raymondo77 Will you be selling your Samsung 75Q9FN and then buying the LG 77C8 OLED?

He's got a 100 day trial, so if anything he will send it back for a full refund and won't be selling it, he might even keep it :)

I was (mostly) joking. I have purchased the Q9 with Samsung's try for 100 days deal, and the running joke is that I'll be returning it and then buying an OLED (most likely the 77C8).

I didn't really expect to like this TV as much as I have, whether the sheen wears off or not is still to be seen though!:D
