Samsung Q800T (QE65Q800T) 8K QLED TV Review & Comments

Looks like a "marketing" tv. Say it has 8k pump the brightness and people with money but no av knowledge will buy. Probably a smart move, I see everywhere that you can be succesfull as long as you are good at making something you sell look good, even if it's not that good after all. But the wrapping matters for most of the peopl more than the content. Realistically the majority will go to a big store, watch the tv ask an employee who probably doesn't know much and then buy wihout really knowing what they are buying...

The reason I bought the 8K Samsung 950R was because it was £500 more than the 4K flagship one and I preferred the picture on all sources. That got dse though so Samsung swapped it like for like in their new 2020 range and have now got the Samsung Q950ts! It’s is a great TV though, I am not a particular fan of this 800tv though I heard the dimming zones were well down on the 8K flagship. One thing I have noticed is that I haven’t seen any judder or stutter on the Q950ts!

To me in response of someone else’s question is that 8K and 4K look the same even on a 75-inch TV. But they do upscale the 4K picture to 8K so that could be why.

If you want an 8K TV buy the Samsung 65Q900t though. Apparently it’s the same picture as the Q950ts and I don’t think you will gain much buying the 75-inch of the 900t. The picture and sound is superb! You also get a free sound bar and sub at the moment with it, bringing it down to £2400 and you think the LG 65CX OLED TV is £1899 and you get no judder or stutter on the Samsung, blacks are incredible and you get a 10 year screen burn warranty. To me that’s the 65-inch TV that people should buy.

The Q900T was the TV I was looking to buy after CES last year. Esp after the early rave reviews it got. However as the year went on, there were ever more negative reviews detailing the lower brightness (than spec) and just overall the price just not being worth it.

Anyways, it's come to a head and I'll have to buy whatever comes out this year. Everything always sounds good around this time of year before the sets are launched but glad I waited, 2020 was a terrible year for Samsung sets in terms of pricing and how they messed about with the specs on the 4k range.

Btw, a 10 year screen burn warranty for an LCD TV.... that is marketing guff.

Trusting the reviews is a better way to go than trusted hearsay that’s what I always do. My Samsung Q950R got slated early on in the owners thread but I still bought it and it was brilliant I ended up with 3 of them! I would demo both and see which you prefer even if it’s only on YouTube.

Saying that if you are interested in the TV you should demo it for yourself is good advice. But I don't think anyone is saying that if you buy it you won't like it. There are many things that a review of this type will bring up that won't necessarily affect the average person's viewing. But many on here are not the average viewer. Phil's review is comprehensive because this is a specialist site and as such the responses are appropriate.

Saying you can demo it on YouTube is a little strange though.

the technical reviews are right then your eye when watching the reviewed TV maybe doesn't see the defects that are there but that's right. the nano91 which in a review we say is not really beautiful. for me it is spectacular

I agree but I personally do get a feel for a TV on YouTube and it was when Phil first done a TV comparison on here I saw how good the Samsung Q90R was. The blacks looked just as good as OLED in the demo and I knew it was going to be a lot brighter.

Didn’t this TV come out last year or is this a paid promotion?

Yes and at this time it is still a relevant model at a reduced price compared to the launch price. And no, our reviews are not paid for and not run as promotions and never will be.

Phil - based on your review I bought the 75 inch Q800t & love it. Picture is amazing. Debated going with LG OLED but price was much better, no burn in & placed it in a bright room so no brainer. Quick question- any settings on Q800t I need to enable to up-convert to 8k from 4K? Is YouTube only 8K source?

Does anybody who reviews these high end tvs actually check then with terrestrial tv and sky q ??.as every review I saw for last years Qled Q SERIES 4k said it was the best .Well its the worst tv for frame drops ,stutter ,Earc problems. It was awful. Need more honest reviews 👍👍👍👍

Yes, I test the built-in tuners and with outboard sources, such as Sky Q. Can I ask if you read the review in full? If you did you must have noted that this Samsung didn't get an easy ride and I noted a number of issues that were present with the picture quality. And with your question about Sky Q I noted in the review:

With 50Hz broadcast viewing from a Sky Q box we did note some frame dropping going on with Picture Clarity switched on, switching this off resolved the issue.

We can only review what is in front of us and that will be honest and thorough as you will note within the actual review. If we don't find an issue we can't report it as an issue. What TV exactly were your comments drawn from when you claim frame drops, stutter and eARC issues? Was it this TV or something else altogether? Did you own it or are you going off comments on the internet and not personal experience? Thanks for your feedback.

Hi.i have the Q85T 55 inch and 49 inch.i have tried every setting possible to get rid of the frame drops.motion on ,motion off .all eco off.the only way I could eliminate the frame drop was to put it in game mode. Its was so bad in any other mode it was horrendous. It was mainly on game shows sport and homes under the hammer kind of programs.not sure if they were all 50 hrz or not.the earc problem happened after an update and the internal apps would not play dolby atmos without sound drop outs .played fine in pmc mode .this was to my denonx3600h. Works fine with my nvidia shield tv.anyway I have been trying to get Samsung to look at the since September, they are not interested and just lie to me all the time .worst customer service I've every dealt with.
Thanks for your time to email me
Graham 👍.

Hey Phil, I'd love to know what settings you enabled to allow HDR content to be even remotely watchable on the Q800T.
I bought the 65" for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and while gaming content and SDR content both look brilliant on it, the HDR content is a dark, muddy, incomprehensible mess. Updating the firmware helps, but is not a real solution.
Example: Any of the Star Wars content through Disney+, from the Lucasfilm logo forward it's so dark as to be unwatchable. Non HDR content is fine. The thumbnail images when FF and RW are bright and clear, anything going through HDR is utter trash.

I also noticed that it dims out opening and closing credits on films, likely due to the local dimming issue. Title cards in films like Kill Bill as well.
