I'm pretty much set on the PS50Q97HDX and its come down to a simple choice : £877 delivered with 1 year waranty or £990 from John Lewis with 5 year warranty.

i'm sure most would go for the JL set, but, I can't help question the value of a 5 year warranty when the sale of goods act can be invoked for a period of 5 or 6 years. Surely no 'reasonable person' would expect a grand's worth of TV to last 1 year..or even 2 or 3 years? Assuming average use of 2/3 hours Vieving a day-how long would YOU expext your new plasma or lcd tv to last?

    I would say 5 years-and I think i'm reasonable!
Has anyone actually taken a seller or manufacturer to task on an expensive product that failed shortly after the manufacturers warranty expired?

Of course, pursuing a fault or failure under the sale of goods act means hassle, whereas, as I understand it, John Lewis are excellent to deal with. I have no experience of them at all.

The price difference isn't such a big deal, it would be nice to have a few quid to spend on some bluray movies though.

would be interested to hear your views on the merits of using the sale of goods act to claim a refund or compensation.

Oh, did I mention I wanted to order the TV today?!

The Sale Of Goods Act is great for covering you, but:

-After 6 months the onus is on the purchaser to prove it was an inherent fault.
-If it is an uneconomical repair after, say 3 years, , you may only be entitled to a partial refund, as you would have had good use out of it already.
-It's only any good if the retailer is still in business. If you've bought from a little-known web store then they might not be in business when you need them.

That said, I wouldn't necessarily pay £100 for a 5-yr warranty either. I'd try and buy it from a reputable online place at a lower cost, OR get JL to pricematch something cheaper.

Plus, of course, if it broke after 3-4 years it's a great excuse to upgrade to the latest and greatest set.

That was the price instore at JL Glasgow, no pricematch involved. Reading through the pricematch thread it seemed like too much hassle and up in Scotland it's within an mile radius! not much chance of finding it cheaper (with a good warranty) aroung Glasgow.

    Hi Boys,
Sorry Empire Direct will have them in stock on the 28th for 869.99, not John Lewis. I ment price match with them.
I can not understand the Scottish John Lewis, I dont think they should have a different policy to England, surely its a misunderstanding on there part.

John Lewis will pricematch ANYWHERE in the UK. I got 3 of these Samsung 50" sets, 2 from JL Aberdeen and one from JL Edinburgh. They both pricematched with PRC Direct.

The radius limit idea is nonsense. You can still get a pricematch retrospectively within 14 days after purchase.

Really?! Do empire direct and PRC have walk in stores? If that's the case I'm going to email JL Glasgow and ask for a price match. Can I use your purchases as a reference?! :D

    Emailed JL Glasgow, here's the reply;

Ok - I'm confused by this!
The section highlighted in Blue would appear to be the 'Except if you live in Scotland' clause. i.e price checking within 8 miles.

Then the bit highlighted green - states that the the price match
    Can anyone decipher this?

I will be emailing them back once I've checked availability of the PS50Q97HDX at Empire Direct. I'm not hopeful for a positive response, but I've already written my reply pointing out the fraudulent nature of their KNU policy if they fail to price match :nono:

    Lets see how this goes....
