OK, I need a plasma in the next month or so before the new Premiership season starts.

After setting my heart on a PV500 I am now undecided again after hearing about the new Samsung PS42S5HX which is £500 or so cheaper.

Are there any reviews available for the PS42S5HX yet ? I know the problems that Samsung had on their previous models and also the whole Tiny plasma problem, both of which put me off a little.

What I want to know is if it is HD Ready ? I want my purchase to be as futureproof as possible and I know it has a HDMI interface but is it HD Ready in the same way as the PV500 and PD7200 is ?

My head is about to explode with all the information and it seems that all plasmas have their faults and you just need to find one that doesn't have faults that will hinder your enjoyment while viewing all devices.

I made the mistake of jumping the gun and buying an LG RZ42PX11 which I returned. I don't want to make the same mistake again........

I have narrowed down the choice to the PV500, PD7200 and PS42S5HX.

I have seen the PS42S5DX in Currys and the design is very nice and the PQ looked decent considering it was running off the terrible RF input.

Has anybody got the PS42S5HX ? If so, what do you think of it ? Did you compare it to all the other models before your purchase ?

    Thanks for any advice..................

The 5H is HD ready. It has an HD ready logo on the front and an HD socket at the back. If you search this site there are reviews by people who have bought either the 5H or the SD model. The ones who have bought the 5H on this site are, to the best of my knowledge, Welsh111, Barney and me - look for the posts. There are several who have bought the SD model and who have posted on here. I compared the SD model to the 500 in Currys and I thought the PQ was very similar. I couldn't tell which was better. Welsh111 has both the 500 and the 5H - see his post for a comparison.

I was thinking of getting the 500 too, but preferred the form factor of the 5H and also the cheaper price. I am very happy with my 5H. I have explained why in various threads previously.

Just as I was getting the hang of which models which, another one comes along :(. So what's the difference between the 5H and the 5HX, apart from the 5HX being 300 quid cheaper and having a 14mm shorter stand?

    Correction:

Don't know about the "X" suffix BUT ...

I think if it's got an "D" suffix - it means it has a Freeview Tuner in addition to an Analogue Tuner.

HOWEVER CHECK WITH THE SUPPLIER AS TO WHAT THEY'VE ACTUALLY GOT - THERE IS A LOT OF RETAIL CONFUSION OUT THERE !!!

Samsung are proving to be pathetic at marketing and giving very little information to the retailers out there

The box is big. I don't know how heavy it is, but it took two of us to lift it onto a stand.

I'm so confused, i swear i saw this 5HX model in currys and the speakers looked detachable then i read theyr'e not. Now i find this page with 2 tvs with the same model number and different pictures, 1 looking distinctly like the speakers are seperate???? Do they make 2 versions? they have the same code or is it (most likely) a typo?

Here you go mate, it is confusing but these images should help :

    PS42D5S :

    http://www.samsung.de/webdownloads/pictures/ps42d5_front.jpg

    PS42D5H :

    http://www.samsung.de/webdownloads/pictures/ps42s5_seitlich.jpg

They do look different which would explain the confusion.

    Hope this helps........

That's still the SD model, ashmufc (hence SDX at the end)

However Pricerunner lists the PS42S5H at:

£1216 at Robertsons-online.co.uk (although it shows as £1489 on their own site)
£1237 at homecinematv.co.uk (their site is down at the moment so I can't confirm)
£1324+del at rgbdirect.co.uk (but it does not appear on their web site)

    They list the PS42S5HX at
£1488 at PRC Direct (don't know if this was the link you were aiming for ashmufc?

Getting really tempted by this now. Only concern really is the next generations Pioneers coming along soon and the PHD8 Panny, although I confidently expect these to be £several hundred more expensive that the Samsung. That'd pay for ISF and a professional install (since I barely trust myself to hang pictures, I'd like someone with indemnity insurance to hang my screen!)

ok those pictures are different and the bottom one definatley looks likke the speakers are seperate. As thats the h i'd say its the one i saw in currys which i could swear came apart.. The top one is blatantly a one piece affair. if they dont split its a pity cause that will stop me buying the sammy

    NO !!

All European models are the same !

The Speakers are an integral part of the unit - and also accomodates the Power On/Off Switch.

As much as prospective customers would like it - the speakers are NOT detachable - no matter how many images you look at.

Otherwise consider buying the more expensive new Samsung panels or consider the even more expensive Panasonic etc etc panels.

For full info look at the PS42S5S/PS42S5H User Manual available at

    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200504/20050421212032843_BN68-00827B-00Eng.pdf

You are right Gussie, the speakers are not detachable, even though they look as though they are.

This is not a problem for me, because i prefer under speakers anyway.

The speakers on the panny 500 aren't detachable either, are they?

Getting seriously tempted by this screen now after speaking to welsh113 who has both the PS42S5HX and the PV500.

I have to see it with my own eyes before deciding of course but I cannot seem to find anywhere that has one on display.

I would really like to hear from people who have watched sport via Sky or NTL to see what they think of the PQ as I will be watching a lot of sport on it.

Also, has anybody seen an Xbox running on one of these ? This will be the next most used device.

    Cheers for any help.........

I use mine for xbox and its good with the newer games but some of the others show off the faults with the game (think this is the xbox not the screen)....as for sports i have not tested it on anything other then tennis but it was very good.

Yes, thats just how I feel also. A great picture out of the box and so easy to set up, with lots of options regarding PQ. For an HD ready plasma for less than 1500, the Samsung in my view takes some beating. Thanks Welsh for advising me too - your advice was invaluable.

C'mon guys how about posting some pics.

I think a lot of us are itching to see it in action, especially playing xbox games on it.

So come on put us out of our misery.

Definitely ! Photos of it in action would be great. Doesn't have to be using an Xbox, anything will do.

    ;)

    Just seen this thread :

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227150

It looks goooooooooood. You can never really tell in a photo but it does look very nice.

Ooooooooo, so so tempted now !

Is there any difference between the PS42S5H and PS42S5HX ?

Seen the H here at Digi UK :

    http://www.digiuk.com/productdetail.asp?id=4189&c=1179054&guid=&s=&sm=

.....and the HX here at Electrical Discount UK :

    http://www.electricaldiscountuk.co.uk/itfx_product_details.php?pid=4245

I thought the difference was that one has FREEVIEW and the other hasn't but going by the specs, neither seems to have it.

A little confusing and the Samsung website is worse than crap at the moment, the new models aren't even on the UK pages.

This has been discussed before. The 5H and the 5HX are the same thing (someone on an earlier thread explained what the X stood for. I can't remember, but it is a standard feature).
