I can get this at a local retailer for 1900 -not interested in web prices - repair returns etc

I cant find one review - only out I suppose

The alternative is the 42PV500 but about 700 more - ideallly 2000 is the max I can pay.

Does anyone out there have experience of this screen - particularly when fed with sky+ - footie and movies are my thing

Really would like to get it today! - but dont want to sit a week later and think I should have waited - would love some help

    Thanks.

FYI, if you have one close then John Lewis do it for £1995 inc a 5 year warranty.

    £1900 doesn't seem that keen a price.
Two physical retailers in my town (wokingham) have it for £1599 and £1695.

Given the warranty, the JL deal looks best though.

Well ive had mine for 3 days and i am over the moon with it the picture gets better and better. With regards to sky the picture depends on the quality of the feed so some are very good others not so good. That is the same with all of them. I bought mine from JL for £15980 after getting them to pricematch rgb. You would be daft to spend so much extra money for the sake of a phone call. Just ring you nearest JL ask them to pricematch RGB and get it delivered with a 5 year gaurantee.

Sorry to hear no JL in NI. As far as football goes it depends on the strength of the signal which again varies so its not a good guide line. However when the hd feeds come out everything will be perfect.

Hi Kingsize Find the cheapest price u can on the web and go to Currys and ask them to match it and they will....at least thats what I did as I prefer to deal with people face to face with such an expensive item...you might even bring the pv500 within your budget (depending weather u want the cabinet for example)...good luck

True. But I would care about customer service too if and when it goes wrong.

Its a tricky equation, but is another £500 for JLs price inc 5 year guarantee and high reputation worth it?

I am not one for extended warranties normally. But seems to me there are potential problems that could cost £500+ that are possible in the 5 year use of a plasma. But I don't want to throw money away either...

Hmmm last time I ventured into the Futurehome shop in Wokingham - it looked like it was a Panasonic shop only.

    Dunno about Jumbo ...

I'll give them both a try this week.

Is is HD Ready ? I know it has a HDMI port and has a 1024x768 resolution but is it HD Ready in the same sense as the PV500 is ?

What about the P5H that is coming out ? What are the differences ?

I have tried to find as much information as I can about the S5HX but seem to get conflicting reports.

Ok I'm wrong there is a Panasonic shop in Wokingam - it's NEXT DOOR !!

Anyway I would suggest not to bother with Futurehome ...

I phoned then asking to see one and I was told that they don't have one on display - they don't need to display them to sell them and he wasn't willing to unbox one for me !!!!

Told the guy I would go down the road to Jumbo to have a look at one that they DO have on display. Then he said OK fine and added that he had lots in stock

I wonder if this guy expects me to come back to him

I thought the whole point of local retailers was they they weren't just BOX SHIFTERS !!!

    Gussie :)

It's next door to a Panasonic shop. Sure you didn't go in the wrong door? :)
A glance at their website will show they are more than Panasonic.

Well they have been there a few years, so must be doing something right.

FYI, I passed the Crowthorne shop just when I went to the bank. They have a PS42S5HX on display. Based on the last time I went in however, it is worth giving them a call in advance to see if they can set it up with an appropriate HDMI DVD player. I went to look at a DLP RPTV they had on display, but they only had it connected to Sky.

edit: didn't see your reply Gussie. Seems like you already know this. Good luck. Let me know how you get on.

What about JL though. If they will price match jumbo, and give a 5 yr guarantee that has to be the best bargain.

    Popped into Jumbo.

Not ideal viewing condtions, PS-42S5H too near the front shop window with the sun streaming in!

The PS-42S5D was right next to it - both fed from the same Sony DVD player via SCART RGB ?

Image on the S5H looked washed out in comparison to the S5D !

Needed contrast level 97 to get a decent image in Standard Mode - not too impressed. But as I said not ideal viewing conditions.

They also had a S5S in stock but not on demo - this is the SD panel with HDMI connector.

So in all they had ...

S5H on demo £1599 - 1024x768 screen HD Ready with HDMI interface
    S5D on demo £1199 - 852x480 screen
S5S £1399 - 852x480 screen HD Compatible with HDMI interface

In the admittedly poor viewing conditions the S5D looked better than the S5H ! as did the JVC panel on the other side!

Need a quick visit to JL (High Wycombe), they have a S5H on demo, probably in better viewing condtitions. JL Reading is closer but don't have the Samsung and their AV dept is really cramped anyway and then there's the expensive parking in Reading!!!

I'll take a printout of the Jumbo price - just in case ;)

    Gussie :)
