Thought a new thread would be ok for user settings and feedback
I am still waiting for mine to arrive, so info about settings would be good.
i have the HD screen and my settings are contrast 60, brightness 46, sharpness at 0, colour at 40 (with colour tone at cool2). I also have the my colour control with the pinks at almost all white on the graph.
Thanks Welsh. I'm still waiting for mine.
hope you get it soon. Out of the box the colours scream at you! I still need to use dve on the screen so will probably have different settings then, I watch alot of american programs like 2and a half men ect and they seem to be very redish on the skin tones that is why i have all tried to get the colours down so they look real instead of ultra fake tanie look let me know when you get your screen, surely it should have been there by now?
Thanks Welsh. Still waiting. What's DVE?
its a dvd that you use to try and calibrate the telly eg get the blacks right and the contrast ect ect....
chavvychase did ya get it???
After a long day of viewing here are my settings(for the S5H):
Used a Pansonic 42PW5 as a reference and did some blind testing with some friends all of whom picked the Samsung, the picture being more vibrant and detailed. The colours are also much stronger. I agree with Welsh on the colour banding/waxing on moving faces being a signal strength problem with Sky digital especially on the weaker channels. However I did not have this problem with the Panasonic which begs the question if it has more to do with the picture processing and the higher screen resolution.
I will be contacting Samsung Germany on this issue.Overall though I'm quite happy with the S5H and will continue to adjust until I get it totally right.
Am off to try the settings posted by Welsh for a quick comparison.
(DVE - Digital Video Essentials)
It came at 7.30 last night. I was still pulling it out of the box when my girlfriend came round and she helped me lift it onto a stand . I put in the connections and within about two minutes we were watching the Live8 event - which we did until 1.00am
I think its fantastic. The colours are rich and vibrant and the picture excellent. I also like the look of it, with its very thin bezel and under speakers. I am very pleased with it. My girlfriend is very impressed with it also. I've not done any adjustments to the picture and to be honest it looks fine to me as it is 'out of the box'. I may play around with the colour settings which you and Barney have mentioned on the forum, but at the moment I'm happy with it as it is.
I am very pleased with my purchase. Including delivery it cost £1495 - which I think is a very good price for a new HD ready plasma.
I will post a longer review when I've had it a bit longer, but so far I am very happy with it.
I thought you would like it Would not tell anyone that it was good just cuz i had it myself. This telly has a few faults it not perfect, I may even go as far as saying its second best to the panny 500 but lets be serious here its not 600-700 pound worse!
I agree. Thanks a lot for your advice also, which is much appreciated. I saw the Panny 500 side by side with the Sammy SD model and i couldn't say which looked better - and given the extra substantial cost of the 500, plus the better (in my opinion) shape and size of the Sammy HD, I decided on the Sammy and have not been disappointed at all. I have been playing around with the colours tonight and still on balance prefer the factory settings - perhaps I just like brightish colours. There is probably no such thing as a perfect plasma, and both the panny and sammy probably have some weaknesses, but they are both very good and I don't think a purchaser would be disappointed with either.
Quick question - just got a PS42S5H two days ago.
Is it best to run the DVD player through Sky+ box and place the Sky Scart into the RGB Scart in the display
run the DVD player directly into the second Scart (although this is not RGB)?
Still playing with my picture settings but can't honestly decide which I prefer - may have to wait a bit as most are advising a new screen will take time to "settle" down.
Doesnt the DVD player have component?
Ok guys going to try and set my plasma up today.
Will be trying my pc on it today as well,so a day of messing and adjusting will commence, will let you all no the results tonight.
Can everybody use this thread for their settings

Paul, how do you get into the service menu? And does it say anywhere how many hours the panel has been running.
@neilmcl: to access service menu put your plasma on standby and press (on the remote): INFO, then MENU, then MUTE then POWER.
But do not mess with it, unless you know what are you doing
I cannot find any information (in the service menu) about running time
No mater what i do i just can't seem to get my samsung ps42s5d to look good.
The pics look so false ,the skin looks very solarised , i can not remember if my first one was like this before it went tits up.
do you think it will get better as the hours tic over?
Has any one got some more settings for me to try.
I too get Colour banding and lots of motion blur on my 5H panel but it's pretty much limited to watching sky with some channels being terrible and others being pretty good.
Occasionally I do notice it on certain DVDs in dark scenes, particulary around peoples hair lines, but then other DVDs with similar scenes are spot on (DVD connected over component with decent leads). As an example, I watched fight club the other night and it was terrible, motion blur, colour banding all over the place, then watched Scary Movie 2 after that and it was perfect, the picture quality even on the dark scenes was pretty good, no blur and as much banding as you'd expect from a PDP.
Running Hi-Def content over a HDMI - DVI connection from my PC is always stunning, no problems at all.
Is it performing better Busdriver2000?
Interested mate whether your sammy is performing better and if so what you did to cure it. Ive got the hd version on order after great reviews from this site, and what I believed to be a great pq (although not as good unfortunately as the PV500, but cash dictates) when i saw a demo in town.
im hoping your initial enthusiasm has not been lost.
Any additional info on initial set up out of the box for a complete novice. would be greatly welcome...
Hello guys, now i have had time to play with my plasma,i have managed to improve the pic much for starters it seems to be settling down a bit now.
I am using 2 settings dynamic and standard.
colour tone norm
digital nr off
my colour control
energy saving super saving
digital nr off
my colour control
energy saving super saving
The standard setting i used avia disk pal
all so the sharpness setting dos not seem to do anything
i find my standard setting has very good blacks ,these settings are temporary till i have got some hours on the plasma then i will reset and recalibrate,
I get better pic from my samsung cable box ntl rgb scart than the inbuilt dvb
xbox is very good i use for divx playback and games (component) and my pc looks very good too (pc input)1024 x 768 72 hertz
so far happy
Thanks bus, much appreciated. I am using the standard setting you suggest at the moment.
You guys are describing the same problems I had with my 4th gen samsung panel. The colour banding and smearing images with panning won't go away no matter how long you let the panel 'run in'. I remember noticing it a lot on fight club too. The first DVD I watched on my replacement panel (PWD6) was fight club and I didn't notice any of these problems. It seems that this is just a thing with Samsung plasma TVs.
Thanks Bus i to am using your standard settings pq looks good but has always been so, now maybe just a lttle better if that makes sense. Sharpness doesnt do anything on my screen either i think its more for ntsc and shouldnt even be enabled for pal hence it doesnt do anything. Please let us know if you come up with even better settings
Are all the SD panels pretty much the same? I have a PS42D5S on order from total digital. I chose this one mainly because I preferred the speaker which is attached to the screen rather than having the gap between speaker and screen and also I'm not likely to have HD in the near future.
Price for this is £1125 plus £20 delivery from Total Digital but I'll comment more once I see what the service is like!!
Yes they are all the same and for the money good value too.
All so ,anybody no what all the settings in service menu do or a good web site where we can find out
Have you bought and received your d5s from totaldigital in birmingham? I was looking at that also, but the information i got from their sales people was absolutely pathetic....no-one seemed to know what the model had and were quoting all sorts of things like idtv and hdtv when this model does not.....the S5h and the p5 are the hdtv compliant and the s5sd is the only idtv tuner.
How did yours get on...what was the delivery and service like? And most of all whats the tv like?
Would like to know very much as i am about to make the plunge and buy one the models but was leaning more towards s5sd with the idtv as nearly all have same specs apart from sd or hd, freeview or not and higher res with the s5h.
I will appreciate your thoughts.
Karlmcauley - I ordered it on Tuesday the 23rd and it said 1 to 3 days delivery on the web site. On Friday the 26th I phoned them to ask when it would be coming, they said Deliveries to Scotland are on a Saturday so I would get a call later that night to tell me when it would come. Friday night, no call!! I phoned again on the Saturday and they said "must be coming next Saturday" At no point did they even bother to check my specific order, they would only tell me deliveries to Scotland are on a Saturday. I am now hoping that the phone call comes tomorrow(Friday) to say it's on its way.
You are right, the staff seem not to know much or care when you phone.
I will post again when I see if it's coming this weekend and let you know what the TV is like. I have seen this TV quoted as having IDTV on some sites but most say analogue so I think this is the case. I will use cable anyway so not too worried. If only Samsung had a decent site to compare models.
so net/net what difference are we going to see between the panels discussed here and the upcoming P5, i'm getting that feeling that it's the same EVERYTHING apart from the sexy new packaging or is there a next generation DNIe chip in there?
