Looks like Dixons and Currys have a model just like that, though it has a few extra letters at the end

    Samsung 42"

Was going to have a look at it this weekend, looks very nice. Seems just like the PS42V4 model that has twin tuners, though I'm not sure if it has the 720 cinema scan, have e-mailed suppliers for more info.

    Cheers spongbob

I mailed Progressive AV for more info and got this response:

"Yes it has only been launched recently. Curry's are the only people that have it at the moment but i'm not sure if they have them on show yet (problem is it looks identical to the much worse older model which they do have on show). If you do the rounds check the model numbers of the screens you are looking at. I still think the Panasonic is better overall, but it is much more expensive and the difference is narrowing now...

The glass is Samsungs fourth generation and it is fabulous - they are now outsourcing it to many of the smaller plasma companies like Vision, Techwood, Hyundai, Relisys etc but only the Samsung has Faroudja processing, and well implemented too. For £2250 it's a bargain, and that includes tuner, speakers and desk stand.

There's no brochure available yet so i've got no more info than what is on our site. You might be able to get a look at one in your local currys/dixons etc, check out the black level on it. Only the Panasonic gets that deep :) "

So it's off down to Curry's at the weekend for a quick look I think

    Nice one :smashin:

Off to currys this weekend, then if it's good, on the phone to progressive scan to order one

Only thing is convincing the wife to let me lay out £2250 :lesson: :D

I wasn't overly impressed to be honest.
Got the sales guy to pipe a DVD feed in through RGB scart (he couldn't do it through component) and the picture quality was not great. Would be better via component using progressive scan and I guess better again through DVI.

Still some confusion over model numbers on these sets though. I am not even 100% sure that the set I saw in Curry's was the same set at Progressive AV - although it looked the same and the model number on the rear matched. Also the screen in Curry's had no mention of the Faroudja DCDi anywhere - I thought they would have had to credit Faroudja with a badge somewhere on the unit??

These screens were discussed on another thread yesterday and I'm wondering if the PS42V4 and PS42D4 are one and the same. If they are - here's an even better price:

Samsung models work their way up as far as I know, D4 is way before V4
(there are also P4 and S4 models floating around both older than the V4)
I assume D4 is the generation 1 Samsung, I know V4 is generation 4 Samsung
I can only assume that Currys/Dixons are doing their usual trick
of knowing absolutely nothing about what they are selling and
telling you any old lie in order to get a sale.
I may be wrong, as Samsungs own website has no information on new models
and when I asked them by email replied saying we know nothing.
As the V4 is available online for £1729 delivered, I would be wary of high street shops.

This is not helped by online suppliers showing any Samsung 42" model
photo combined with any model number. The photo on the link is a V4.

The letters on the end of the Model number merely indicate included accessories (so PS42V4SX is P=Plasma S=Samsung 42" V4 S=Silver X=Stand)
    A=Speakers

The spec for every advertised Samsung model is identical but the early
models are supposed to buzz like crazy, this is said to be cured in the V4.
    BE VERY CAREFUL!

or without the tuners PPM42S3 (PM=Plasma Monitor)
    http://www.monitors-online.co.uk/more_info.php?id=217&referrer=kelkoo

The link you give appears to be the V4 taken from a slightly different angle
the various descriptions say DNIe Pro, DNIe, Alis
but I don't trust anyone to have their facts right, until Samsung state them on their web site.
I may be completely wrong in my model comparisons, but find it highly suss that the Samsung site is so vague. One might think Samsung have a warehouse full of older models they are trying to shift.
An alternative reading of the version numbers could be
    S4 is model S generation 4
    S3 is model S generation 3

As BE-Direct are selling 3 alternative model numbers, maybe a phone call to them might be in order, if you trust them to know or tell you the truth.
You may notice BE-Direct state the V4 has 1 tuner
Electrical discount (and most other sites) state the V4 has 2 tuners
    http://www.electricaldiscountuk.co.uk/itfx_product_details.php?pid=3211
the speaker output of the V4 is either 12w or 15w depending on the site you view.

very confusing. I have the PS42V4SX and got it from Empire. Very pleased with it but after reading your threads, I wonder it it has DCDI. I know it has DVDi but then again I don't understand all the new inputs/ouputs!

Would be good to clear it up. By the way, try checking the Swedish Samsung website, it has my unit on it. Need to translate though!

What does yours look like Hicksy? Is it all silver with an oval base?

To my mind, the PS42D4S seems the same as the PS42V4, except the latter has a silver frame and the former has a dark grey/black frame. The connections, oval base, contrast ratio... - all seem to be the same. There might be some discrepancies with the resolution, but I think that might be due to misprints...

I went to see the PS42D4 at Comet the other weekend and must say it looked pretty good. Only Comet do it though and the price, at £2299, is still far higher than what you can get for the PS42V4 over the net.

to start with, mine that i saw in curry's was priced at £2,499! But Emire undersold quite a bit.

In reply to your question about the difference to the PW6 - I don't knoiw. It does seem as though that is the only plasma around!!

I think mine is a gen 4 so must compete quite well.

Mine is a silver colour all over with the oval stand. I have just wall mounted it and it looks a hundred times sexier.

Any probs with noise from your screen Hicksy?

I've heard the noise issue (likened to a neon tube) that blighted older generations is not apparent on the 4th gen models?

sorry to sound vague, when people talk about noise/buzzing....what precisely do they mean. I presume there must be an element of slight noise from the back of the set???

THere is a slight noise at the back, bu8t thats me putting my ear on the rear of the set!! if you had it on mute, you wouldn't hear it.

after 3 months of trouble with my techwood plasma currys have agreed to take back the set and exchange it for a samsung ps42d4, that was after telling them i was going to trading standards. it was the only set in the store that i could get good pq on, i had the salesman running round finding all the remotes for each set i was trying, only thing is that i have to wait as they have no stock at the moment, could be up to 3 weeks. I went on the samsung web site to look for the manual, could only find it to down load on the portugal site, looks good cant wait

I received mine yesterday (ps42v4s) and it's huge, the pictures very good but a little bright at the mo, so I do need to tweak some settings. Sound is very good as well. I must admit when seated I can't hear any buzzing and even really close up can't hear any either. Just need to sort out the interconnections to get the best picture out and some of the settings. I have the picture set to standard at the moment, what's yours set at Hicksy?

That was my first words! It is a massive screen. I too tried listening for buzzing but nothing. I think i have mine on standard because it lowers the brightness. I will double check tonight. THe simpsons really shines on PQ!

I am still deciding whether to change my connections. i currently use scart only but will buy Compnent leads.

By the way, you must buy the samung wall bracket....you haven't seen anything til its mounted!

Do you find peoples faces are too bright, the rest of the colours are perfect and so is the detail, it just looks like there is a lot of glare on the flesh. It could be just me though. I use only scart as well and will be looking at changing in the not so distant future but to be honest do not know that much about it to make an informed choice.

If yours is set for standard could you make a note of the brightness, contrast etc settings?

Where did you get your wall bracket from, is it a samsung on or a universal one.

    Thanks, Shaun

I just had another thought about the version numbers
Currys/Dixons/Comet often get companies to bring out a version just for them
so people can't insist on "price matchs" maybe the "D" stands for Dixons.

I guess I jump in here.

As some people know, I was in Hong Kong for a while, and I reported the world of electronics there.

And I can say that PS-42S4S came out last autumn in Hong Kong.
PS-42D4S came out during spring and they also launched PS-42P4H with HD panel.

D4 is newer, and it has their DNIE generation 2 technology and generation 4 panel, while S4 uses generation 1 DNIE but looking at the contrast and brightness, it is probably also a generation 4 panel.

I can say that the Samsung D4 and S4 picture was very good, as well as the LG PX11, they both have very similar specs indeed.

Specs can be found here on Samsung Hong Kong.

    http://www.samsung.com/he/products/tvplasmadisplay/plasmatv/ps_42d4s.asp
    http://www.samsung.com/he/products/tvplasmadisplay/plasmatv/ps_42s4s.asp

Manuals in English can also be found there.

I don't know what V4 is suppose to be, it could be the D4 of Hong Kong.

I hope it helps a bit.
