Samsung Phone Smart Network Switch Warning!!

Hi this is a bit of advice that I found out to late to save me £80! on my phone bill. This is the story I got my Samsung Edge 6+ in Sept this year after coming off years on the iphone and so far i like the Samsung phone expect this hiccup. I was due to fly off to Malaysia in November So I had a few mths to get used to the Samsung everything was OK except I did not know how to turn of mobile data off ( I already Knew how to turn off data roaming off) So I went into the O2 shop so the man in the shop showed me what to do it was on the pull down screen I felt a right idiot ( I use my age 66 as the excuse!) I then asked him once that is switched i would not incur any roaming charges NO he said. So i flew to Malaysia on Nov 7th in the knowledge that my phone was set up so i would not have to pay anything extra on my phone bill I even got Whats App so my messages would not cost anything also I stay at the 5 star hotel in KL "Royale Chulan" so i knew there was very good wifi it had to be as the President of the USA was staying there also the time I was there was the asian conference so other heads of State where also staying at the hotel so wifi had to be top notch. After I had stayed there a couple of days I got a message from O2 saying I had reached my mobile data limit of £40 I thought i could this be !!!! I had it switched everything switched off but when I looked at my phone the mobile was switched on How could this happen I quickly turned it off and kept a eye on my phone but some how i incurred a other £40 so i turned the phone off until i got back to the UK. I then rang up Samsung what caused the problem was that "Smart Network Switch was set to on" and this what caused the mobile data to come on. So why did the guy in the O2 shop not tell me that!! he knew a darn more about this phone than I did. So when you go abroad go to settings then to wifi then press more on the top right corner go to smart network switch and turn it off and that will stop it. I know on the iphone all you had to do was go to settings switch off the data roaming switch to off and that was it. So why on the samsung phone do have to go to settings switch 3 buttons off and one of those is hidden where one would suffice. So that is the Warning so make sure that SMART NETWORK SWITCH IS SET TO OFF!!! WHEN ABROAD.A HAPPY NEW TO YOU ALL

Handy to know mate, very unlucky though. Seems a tragic feature to turn data roaming back on when you had it off!

Would this be a feature on all Android phones or just Samsung as I would not know because I only have Samsung phones.

However nice tip to let all know who do not, I have to say though I went abroad with a samsung phone and used WIFI but this did not happen to me. However could be that the Edge+ has this on by default ?

I am the same as you I have only the samsung phone so I also do not know if it is on all android phones either. My wife has a iphone all she had to do is turn off data roaming and that was it no problem and yes it was on when i rang samsung and the guy who i spoke to at first did not even know where it was and had to speak to someone higher up to find out So everybody out there please check I do not know why Samsung put it on there. if O2 had not put a limit of £40 each time I was using it and not even knowing that I was gods knows what the cost would of been !!!!! A message to Samsung Please Make it easy to turn mobile roaming off and not have a silly program that does not take any notice when you turn mobile data & data roaming and you think it is all off when it is not

A good warning, but chaz, paragraphs are your friend.

I think the real lesson is to take the time to play with settings when you first get your smart phone. Ensuring smart network switch was turned off was one of the first things I did upon going to the Note 4. I do no recall this is a feature on stock android but can check when I get back and look at the Nexus 5

Whether it would work with these circumstances but you can set a data limit on the phone itself within (I think) any android phone if you go into data usage - enable mobile data and then a further option appears to set the data limit as well

I did not know this thing had a smart data switch or where it was that why I went into the O2 shop to make insure i would not get extra charges. As far as I can see the shop is at fault so I am now waiting to talk to O2 to see if I can get a refund

Went into the shop yesterday even with heavy rain I first asked the shop assistant if going abroad What would have to how do to stop roaming data he showed me exactly what the guy told me before I went to Malaysia. When I showed him what you have to do he looked shocked I said "I will go and get the Manager". The manger turned up and i informed him of what O2 had said about the shop not giving me the right information he turned round and said he would not pay it and said "Take it up with Samsung " my wife went to talk him and he turned round and went back to his office which I thought was very rude I called him a certain rude word and went to walk out. I then slipped on some water and went down flat on my back and it hurt The manager then become very nice called a paramedic and they closed the shop until he arrived. Thankfully nothing was broken expect a tear in my coat and broken denture but the paramedic was very concerned about my blood pressure which was very high indeed. I then got in touch with O2 all they said was see a lawyer. They seemed not to give a toss so I my wife took photos and it will be sent to O2 plus the Manager will send in a report and the paramedic report also. Then see what their attitude will be I will let you know how i get on

That is a very upsetting way to start the year! Hopefully they'll look upon with a more sympathetic view but companies really are the pits!

At least your alright and haven't broken anything!
