Samsung M87 - NTSC Tuner?

Evening all,

I work onboard the QE2 and have been given the task of buying a new TV to replace a broken JVC Plasma in one of the crew bars. Prior to starting this contract I spent a couple of months deciding upon the M87 as a TV for my home, and was blown over by just how good it is.

So obviously this was my first choice for the replacement; however, the TV system on board uses NTSC, so my question is does the M87's analog TV tuner support NTSC? I've Googled using several different queries but have struggled to find anything on the subject.

If indeed it doesn't, can anybody suggest a suitable alternative?

TIA :)

The analog tuner almost certainly will not, and that'll go for all LCD TVs sold in Europe. They'll all accept NTSC over the video inputs though.

Bugger :( Thanks for letting me know so quickly anyway, could have been my P45 if I'd have ordered it and it didn't work :D

So I take it I'm constrained to units sold in the US? I realise this is a UK forum, but anybody any ideas what could match the M87 over the pond?

They don't actually sell the exact equivalent of the M87 in the US, their version has 10,000:1 contrast as opposed to 15,000:1 on the UK model.

They do sell a model with the same specs as the M87 but it is a slightly different form factor;

If I were you though, I'd consider the brand new 25,000:1 contrast model;

They call it the 71F, in the UK it's called the F86,

If you really want to push the boat out though (pun intended) and you have a little time to wait as well as a higher budget, the LED Backlight models are due out soon.

Not on the US website although we believe it will be called the 81F. In the UK it is the F96.

EDIT - If you go for one of these and I'm ever on the QE2, I expect an invite to the crew bar for a cheap beer.

Once had the privilege of attending a crew party below decks aboard the MS Vistafjord when she was a member of the Cunard fleet, great lads n' lasses they were.

Many thanks for that list. I think we're gonna go for the LNT4065F (40" model) as we can't really afford to wait (footie's having to be watched on a dodgy 14" CRT :eek: ).

Can you just confirm that a TV bought from the US will have a NTSC analog tuner? I'm still a little apprehensive about ordering it for it not to work :rolleyes: :D

Again, thanks a lot for your help - and I'd gladly buy you a beer (or crate at these prices), but sadly afaik we're pretty much fully booked until we're off to permanent residence in Dubai!

Being from the UK, I'd be reluctant to say yes with 100% certainty although the UK M87 has a PAL analog tuner as I'm sure you are aware.

Now you know the US model options available, my suggestion would be to drop a quick email to Samsung US and confirm it with them before purchase.

Oh and as for the beer, I was only joking as I can't see myself getting on a cruise again in a while, having said that I've never been to Dubai.

Good luck with your purchase, let us know how it goes.

They usually have hybrid tuners that can decode old fashioned analog NTSC and ATSC (the HD standard) - similar to how the stuff we get can decode PAL and DVB-T.
