    Welcome everybody:hiya:

I'm on the lookout for a new LCD. I can get the LE40R74BDX for £899.99 or the LE40N73BD for £1154.99. Is it worth spending the extra £255 for the N7? or is there no real picture quality improvement to warrant it? Not too bothered about the extra HDMI socket.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

I've been wondering the same thing :)

... I know the more expensive one has a better brightness...
but apart from that I'm not sure if theres much in it.. the added HDMI would be nice... but its quite a lot of quids extra...

eakkk sky+ problem.. wasn't aware of that... thats the main input I would be giving the tv...

Think I may go for the LE40R74BDX, as right now it drops down quite nicely with discount codes on the dixons website to 784.00 14.99p&p ....

Hi all, had the same dilema, R74 or N73.

My choice was easy, had the R74 on order with Empire direct @ £799 for 2 weeks and no show, so with a bit of moaning got it upgraded to an instock N73 for £100 more.

Turned up today, first impressions are.... what a sexy TV, the design of these sets (the R74 included) are in my opionion the best.
Practical the stand swivels, and feels sturdy. The connectivity is good and I am pleased that this has 2HDMI's as awaiting new upscaling Pioneer 696 dvd and will be on the list for NTL Virgin HD - so no switching box needed.

Sound is acceptable but hey I have cinema surround for a bit of whoomph.

I could do with some help though.....

Picture Settings ..... not that great out of the box, if anyone has some of their own they would like to share, would be much appreciated. Have been fiddling but feel that the set has som much to offer than my trial and error so far !!!

Secondly - you can set the remote to operate dvd and cable box but alas no codes in the manual for pioneer or my cable box. Anyone know these ?

I think it will have to be an N73 for me too

I would like someone to confirm they have it working with Sky+ without any probs if possible.

I seen a setup guide for the R74 somewhere in the forums, maybe you can try the same setup for your N73 as there nearly the same TV for the picture quality.

    Thanks Del,
Will have a play with that.

Top tip so far I have found is the energy saving level - this has a major effect on the picture to give a more natural look.

Still playing with the set up ....
Cant wait for my new Upscaling DVD

If you like gagdgets .... this tv has the coolest turning off 'tone'.

Still struggling with the codes for my pace ntl box and pioneer dvd, if anyone knows or can point me in the right direction, would be most appreciated.

I was tinkering for which one aswell.

However i read a review in one of the mags and it only gave the N73 3/5 for poor freeview as far as i can remember.

Tell you waht mind you don't need anything to be any lighter with the R74 it's blinding as it is and thats turned down. I am well happy with the pic since i had V+ installed to upscale the channels. It's the Mutts. Sound is poor on both but not wehn connected to a amp. :)

I believe the N73 is newer than the R74, and has a card reader and one extra HDMI port?

Imo the glass bottom part on the N73 looks sexy.
But im cool with my R73 ( Same as R74 except its got a blue strip instead of silver )

    :) Hi guys

I went for the R74 in the end as i don't need 2 HDMI ports & i'm not fussed about a card reader & it was on £899 from currys, got a nice stand & some surround sound.

So far gaming wise on the 360 is amazing, sky+ is a little rough, but i will have to do some fine tuning.

Does anyone know if i connet my Sky+ box using a scart lead into the Sky+ box & then Composite leads into the TV would it make anymore difference to the picture quality.

    Thanks

    Del

composite (you might be confusing this with component, different altogether) is about as bad as it gets (apart from an Ariel feed that is) just stick to scart and make sure you have sky set to rgb output and have a play about with the picture settings:smashin:

    Thanks for reply

The cables i'm thinking about are the Blue, Green & Red.

When i plug my xbox 360 into these the picture is 100X better

So i was thinking of getting a Scart from sky box to those colour cables

Any thougths or just stick to the original scart ???

those colours do indicate component which is for better than scart but you cant get a scart to component cable because they are different formats, so stick with just scart:smashin:

Just had a quick look at a company near me & they do a lead but not sure if this would do it, if anyone can have a quick look & let me know if this cable would do, or would a Scart to S-Video be better than scart to scart.

Sorry for all the questions as i'm new to this & just want the best possible picture.

    Hi Del,

New cable in place (replaced a cambridge audio scart I bought 5 years ago) and cant see any difference !?!

The picture was pretty good before and still is, so not sure if I have achieved anything !!!

Anyway, the cable itself is pretty impressive in build etc so at 23 quid, I am not too disappointed.

I did connect my tv to home cinema by dig optical and this was so much better than connecting my NTL cable box via rca to home cinema amp.

Again I bought an upgraded dig cable and this appears to have similiar performance to the one it replaced.

    Hope this helps.
    Kevin
