Samsung LE-F86 Series Thread *Part 2*

I´ve had my LE46F86BD for almost 2 years, bought it the 15th november 2007 from the biggest onlineshop in Sweden(Dustin) and ive been one happy owner.
Last week something changed and i dont know what. The TV has been on a wallmount since week 1.

I called samsung, they have 2year warranty, but not on this TV since Dustin havent bought it from them. I called Dustin, they say nooooo its 1 year only.

Modelcode LE46F86BDX/XEC
Type PY46EO

The first 2 pictures is from a 720p movie and the other is the analogue cabel, which really sucks, but i still see my vertical lines. Anyone have any clues at all?

Ive tried all 3 hdmicontacts and no difference. I got my HTPC which has hdmiout connected to the tv. Tried changing from 24-60hz on graphicscard but no change. Also tried alot of different setups on the tv.

Since english isnt my first language i dont understand what humbars is, and also what is clouding?

Added the pictures as links cause they are big (4mb)

I have a similar problem, sometimes the television works fine, and then the next minute there are different shades of mainly blueish lines running vertically down the screen. At first I thought it was a problem with my Xbox, but its since happened using other video sources. Ive tried using different connect cables but the problem persists.
I couldn't tell you what humbars is, but i would assume clouding is a blurring affect where the colours merge with each other. But that is a complete guess.
My set is 2 months out of warranty and I've contacted Samsung, and i'm awaiting a reply.

Hi,

My LE40F86BD is nearly two years old and intermittently (with increasing frequency) it will show a fuzzy green screen and i hear a click, then it goes to standby. After a second or so it comes back on.

This usually happens about 40 mins after watching an Xvid via PS3 and then keeps re-occurring more frequently.

I have done the following without success:

- unplugged everything overnight
- switched power cable
- switched HDMI port
- used a different PS3

Any ideas ?

Olli

Ok so I have found this thread :)

I have had my F86 for nearly two years now and recently it has started to develop horizontal lines across the screen and I believe they are getting worse :(

Does anyone else have any experience with this or does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Would prefer not to send it back to Samsung if possible :)

I have not updated any firmware since I have got the television as I'm not 100% sure how to do it lol.

Looking forward to any reply's [:)]

EDIT:

It's the click-of-death problem, which I imagine is the capacitors on the power board.

Called Samsung - as it's out of warranty they won't help whatsoever. Last time I spend good money on Samsung - may as well have bought a cheap £600 set and thrown it away every 18 months for a new one!

Hi all,

I've had my LE46F86BD for nearly 2 years now, and had no problems whatsoever with it.

I have 5 devices connected, Sky+ HD (HDMI 1), Xbox 360 (HDMI 2), PS3 (HDMI 3), Mac Mini (VGA) and a Wii (Component) and all function perfectly with great image quality.

However... Christmas day I switched on the TV and it took ages to "boot" up. The clicking you get when the red power light comes on happened over 20 times, then the lower 3 lights (with the + and - illuminations) came on, then a few more clicks, 3 more symbols illuminated, then finally (albeit slowly) the picture appeared.

Obviously being a 2007 model I expect the firmware to be old, however does this sound like a system fault worthy of calling an Samsung engineer?

Any help/advice etc. appreciated.

Horness.

Hi,

your fault does'nt sound too bad I would suggest getting a quote for repair and maybe install the latest f/ware file
and see if its worth repairing.

Its going to cost a lot to replace, so maybe spending a couple of hundred quid on a repair is well worth it.

Hope you get sorted soon.

HM.

Does anybody know how long the Samsung warranty for LCD TVs is in germany and other countries? I am currently searching their site for that information, but keep getting an error when I hit the site:

404 Error - Samsung Electronics GmbH

Thanks alot

I spent ages on the phone to Samsung trying to get some information about troubleshooting the fault and getting a firmware update.

All I got back from them was that the unit comes with 12 months warranty, 1 day after that and you're on your own. No help whatsoever. An apology would have been nice - but it was just the same stuck record "the unit is outside the warranty, we cannot do anything for you. Contact a third party or your retailer for assistance".

Thanks a lot Samsung - last time I spend a few thousand on one of your products. After sales is a joke.

Best quote I have so far is around £100 to repair. Anyone got any links to firmware and how to upgrade it? That would be a great help when I get it back from repair.

UPDATE

I ended up calling a company called Birmingham Specialised Services.

They quoted £100-ish, and told me it was £60 to have it collected and taken back to the workshop etc. for a quote.

The guy from BSS arrived this morning, and knew exactly what the problem was (capacitors) and had brought them with him. The soldering genius had it stripped, fixed, and working in under an hour.

£60 all in and I have a working Samsung again.

Happy New Year all.....

Has anyone seen this fault before?

Its an intermitent problem happened first about a month ago but lately is happening more often. When the tv is switched on on whatever source input I get the normal black screen but with a vertical red bar runniing down the middle of the screen then when i have sky hd or any source switched on the area where the line is becomes very distorted.

Have had the tv for nearly 2 years so samsung or tv shop wont help one bit.

Any ideas as to whats causing it would be appreciated, also if anyone knows of any good tv engineers in leeds area too.

Pic below!!
Thanks

All these two year old TV problems make me glad I bought from John Lewis who provided a free 5 year guarantee :smashin:

Free five year guarantee not replacing like for like, my 2 and half year old 40f86 needed to be returned to shop due to whole picture forming into 3 very dark horizontal lines with picture totally obscured. It was like looking at tv through sunglasses in an already dark room!
It would correct itself after 5-10 mins after switching on, anyway I sent tv back under 5 year warranty only to be told it was a panel issue and shops insurer told them repair cost more than TV was now worth so its a "write off" and i was offered £450. Not bad as TV cost £1200!!!

Go back to JL and complain. I would not accept it and would take them to small claims over it.

Wasn't JL mate ,it was RW. Thing is I have now ordered Sony 40EX403 from JL and need the £450 to put towards it. Thought this was very shoddy as well but guy at RW said everyone thought they would get replacement TV but not the case with these so called warranties.

Is this normal with free 5 year warranties?

Ah I see that RW have a get out clause:

Warranty - Robert Whyte Ltd

SCHEDULE F

Beyond economic repair, if the repair cost is greater than the current market value of the faulty product, settlement will be offered on the following basis. Using the current equivalent priced specified or similar product as displayed on our website, 16% depreciation per year will be applied against part exchange or 18.5% per year based on a cash settlement. In the event of the part exchange option being selected the remaining period of your warranty or the period of warranty offered with the new product will apply whichever is greater.

Cheers eddiewood, in your opinion is this get out clause legal/common ala JL?

P.S your previous reply prompted me to start a new thread on this subject to throw it out there and see what came back!

It is legal since you agreed with the warranty T&Cs when you bought the item. You could have put in a claim under Sales of Goods Act arguing that the TV should have lasted longer, but who knows if you would have got more than £450 out of it?

I suspect that if I were to make a claim to JL under similar circumstances I would be offered a TV of similar specification to what I have now, but not one that was the same price that I paid a couple of years ago. I assume that I would also be able to take a cash alternative and put the balance towards a "better" TV.

The blue light at the bottom of my 40" F86 for some reason won't stay off! I keep going into the menu and setting it to "never on", at which point it will go off, but next time I turn the telly on the light comes on again and the setting has changed back to "always". Anyone know what is going on?

Sounds like its a fault to me, I had my F86 set for LED strip to illuminate when TV was switched on and it always stuck to the chosen setting. Is it something you could live with as cost of repairing could be more than TV is now worth, although it doesn't sound like an expensive fix.

Ah, found that my TV was in shop mode which means that settings do not get saved. Must have been my 11 month old son who keeps crawling up to the telly and pressing the buttons!

Understand buddy, best of luck to you and the Missus inc the "wee" one!!!

Hey guys I really need some help with my tv(Le40f86) :( I recently bought a Sony Dn840 receiver but im having problems with the pass through. As long as I have a Anynet+ connection then the pass through works when I put the receiver into standby but as soon as I turn the tv to standby it loses the anynet+ connection and pass through lasts for 30secs before it stops after receiver being turned off.

This is already my second dn840 as I thought the 1st one was faulty but im starting to believe its the tv screwing the connection up. Any1 got any ideas what might be going on or possible solutions?

Currently only way to re establish the anynet+(hdmi-cec) connection is to unplug the tv and receiver, disconnect the hdmi cable from tv, wait 5 mins and reconnect all and bingo its back again.

Tried different cables and hdmi inputs its always the same, im fine till I put tv into standby.

After testing another Samsung tv in the house with the receiver, I can confirm it is my LEf86 that's not playing nice :( Ive contacted Samsung directly who've fobbed me off with " we don't have any firmware upgrades for that tv" Yes I know there not available online the repair engineers have them grrrrrr.

Does any1 know if the firmwares are available to download from anywhere on the net?
